Claiborne Parish was established March 13, 1828. The parish was named in honor of the first American governor of Louisiana, William C. C. Claiborne. The original territory was taken from Natchitoches Parish. In 1843, Portions of the parish territory were lost to the formation of Bossier Parish (1843), Jackson Parish (1845), and Bienville Parish (1848).
The county seat of Claiborne Parish was Russellville, Overton, and then Athens. Homer is the current county seat.
