Oct. 14, 1983 Ramon Labat Ramon Labat services set for Saturday. Ramon J. Labat, a long-time administrator of Nicholls State University, died Thursday night of a heart attack. Labat, 51, worked at Nicholls since July, 1973. The Vacherie native was an assistant professor of music and the associate director of financial aid at the university. He held a Bachelor of Music Education from the University of Southwest Louisiana and a Masters of Education from Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge. He also attended Nicholls State and the University of Mississippi. He was a past president and treasurer of Phi Delta Kappa and a member of the board of Louisiana High School Athletic Association from 73-74. Labat was also a governor's appointee to the Lafourche Basin Levee District from 1972-1980; he was elected secretary by the board of directors for the entire eight-year period. Labat was the principal of Edgard High School from 1966-1973; prior to that he was the band director at that school for almost 10 years. He served in the Army from 1953-1955. As vice-president of the Krewe of Chronos, he was a lifetime honorary member of the Krewe for his service as Krewe captain for three years and co-captain for five. He was also a member of the legislative committee of the Louisiana Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators. Oct 17, 1983 Dr. Marie Fletcher Fletcher services held today Dr. Vida Marie Fletcher, professor emeritus of English and a charter member of the Nicholls State University faculty, died at 12:01 a.m. Saturday at her home. She was born Oct. 11, 1913 in Verda, La. Dr. Fletcher, 70, was chairman of the Nicholls Department of English from 1974-77 and had earlier been acting head. She retired from the fulltime faculty in 1980 but continued to teach until her death, on a part time basis. She received degrees in English from Northwestern State University in 1938, and from LSU in 1944 and 1982. She also studied at Mississippi State for several summers. Dr. Fletcher taught at Verda High School, in Grant Parish, from 1932 to 1943 and at Lake Charles High School from 1942 until 1948 when she joined the faculty of Nicholls Junior College. She also taught at Lake Charles High School during 1954-55 and at Northwestern from 1963-1967. The Nicholls Alumni Federation declared her an honorary alumna in 1974 and gave her its distinguished service award in 1981. In 1975, she received the distinguished service award of the Louisiana Council of Teachers of English. She was a member of the Thibodaux Literary Club, Louisiana Folklore Society, Friends of the Library, United Methodist Women, Delta Zeta Sorority, Sigma Tau Delta, Delta Kappa Gamma, the American Association of University Women, Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society and many professional organizations. She was faulty adviser to Alpha Lambda Delta, a freshman honor society. She also founded "Pencil Tracks", the first literary magazine at Nicholls. Oct 25, 1983 Mount Carmel principal dies [Sister Mary Immaculata Garcia] Funeral services were held Monday at the Mount Carmel Motherhouse, New Orleans, for Sister Mary Immaculata Garcia, O. Carm., former principal of Mount Carmel High School in Thibodaux and educator in schools conducted by the Sisters of Mount Cannel, who died Friday there. She was 72. Sister Immaculata served as principal of Mount Carmel in Thibodaux from 1946 & 55 and helped direct the efforts to building Mount Carmel's gym, the first gym built in Lafourche Parish. A native of New Orleans and graduate of Mount Carmel Academy, she was the former Jeanne Garcia. She entered the congregation in 1926, made her religious profession in 1929 and pronounced her perpetual vows in 1932. She received her bachelor's degree in math from Loyola University in New Orleans in 1939 and her master's degree in math from Catholic University in Washington, D.C. in 1949. Besides Thibodaux, Sister Immaculata served as principal of St. Augustine in New Orleans, Mount Carmel in New Iberia, Mount Carmel in Lafayette, Mount Carmel in Abbeville and St. Euhprasia in Granada Hills, Calif. She also worked in the intercommunity house of social work in the St. Thomas Project in New Orleans. She was the treasurer general of the Sisters of Mount Carmel from .1955-61 and a member of the general council from 1973-77. She also served 22 years as local superior in several convents in her community. She is survived by four sisters, Mrs. John Bork, Mrs. Evelyn Gallagher, Mrs. J.U. Oct 28, 1983 Mary Westerman Funeral services were scheduled for 11:30 a.m. today at Thibodaux Funeral Home, Thibodaux, for Mary Louise Westerman, 45, who died at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday. Religious services were scheduled for noon today at St. Bridget's Catholic Church, Schriever, with interment in the church cemetery. She was the mother o1 Kenny, Ricky and Timmy Westerman and the late Todd Westerman; sister of Elton, Nelson and Ned Benoit, Rita Rodrigue; daughter of Mrs. Edward Benoit and the late Edward Benoit.
