Landry, 69, a native of New Orleans and a lifelong resident of Houma, an environmentalist, conservationist, family man and former member of the Terrebonne Parish Police Jury, died peacefully Monday, Aug. 9, 2010, in Houma following a year long battle with liver and kidney disease. Landry grew up with a deep appreciation for the beauty and productivity of the coastal wetlands of south Louisiana and Terrebonne Parish. An avid fisherman and sportsman all his life, he recognized early the myriad of destructive forces laying waste to the fabric of the coastal wetlands. It was his love for these natural resources that shaped his 8-year tenure on the Police Jury, the predecessor of the present Terrebonne Parish Consolidated Government. A two-time recipient of the prestigious National Wildlife Federation Conservationist of the Year award, Landry devoted his public life to environmental consciousness, coastal preservation and restoration. Before his terms on the Terrebonne Parish Police Jury, he formed the South Louisiana Environmental Council, one of the first environmental action groups in South Louisiana. Legendary sea explorer Jacques Cousteau once called on Landry for advice and input on his studies of Louisiana's massive but disappearing wetlands. In his private life, he was equally devoted to Judy, his loving wife of 49 years, his five children, seven grandchildren and one great grandchild; and a myriad of friends and acquaintances from all walks of life. Born in New Orleans in 1940, Landry was a life-long resident of Houma and worked with his father at the former Landry's Drugstore on East Main St. He graduated from St. Francis de Sales Boys School in Houma in 1958, attended Loyola University in New Orleans and received his pharmaceutical diploma from the University of Houston School of Pharmacy in 1963. He worked as a pharmacist for 47 years; his last day worked was less than two weeks before he died. Landry is credited with taking a hands-on approach to parish finances as chairman of the Police Jury's Budget and Finance Committee. He studied and understood the parish budget as much or better than any of his predecessors; and he used this knowledge to obtain funding and support for conservation and community projects. In the early 1980s, before the high level twin span bridges were built over the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway in downtown Houma, Landry pushed the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to require that all bridges over waterways in Terrebonne Parish remain open to vehicular traffic during peak traffic hours. Long time Houma residents will remember the daily traffic jams and insufferable waiting that occurred frequently before the corps finally agreed to his proposal. Those efforts still benefit motorists today, even though the old draw bridges downtown have been replaced by the high-level twin spans. Other bridges that open for boat traffic must remain closed during peak vehicular hours. He also recognized the need and was instrumental in getting sidewalks on the high rise bridges that cross the Intracoastal waterway after taking daily counts of the pedestrian traffic that passed in front of Landry's Drugstore on Main Street. He also worked to establish and maintain public parks throughout the parish and was instrumental in providing financial support for the annual Christmas Parade. He helped with the formation of the Farmer's Market in Houma and was a key advocate and public voice of the oral history exhibit at Bayou Terrebonne Waterlife Museum with local filmmaker Glen Pitre. As an avid outdoorsman and fisherman, he was a member of the Terrebonne Black Bass Club and won the Grand Isle Redfish Rodeo for 3 consecutive years among many other fishing awards and trophies. He believed in staying physically fit, and having fun doing it. Landry was an annual participant in many local pirogue races, winning first place many times. He loved paddling through the dense bottomland hardwood forests near Gibson, where he knew the exact location of the few colossal cypress trees left standing after the clear cutting practices of the early 20th century. Long-timers at the YMCA remember Landry's daily swimming routine, where he enjoyed the exuberance of a miles-long swim in the Olympic pool on an almost daily basis. His life's work on environmental preservation in coastal Louisiana was the basis of the fictional character "P. Donald 'Duck' Landrieu", a.k.a. "Dr. Duck" in novelist Ken Wells' Cajun thriller, "Crawfish Mountain". As in real life, Landry's character led the efforts against big oil and its shady polluters to expose chemical dumping in fragile wetlands. Landry was an organ donor. His eyes may someday provide the gift of sight to a blind person. She was a faithful worker for Lion's Crippled Children's Camp and continued work for her husbands eye foundation projects. She loved cooking for her family and friends and taking care of her lovely home. She also enjoyed playing cards especially with her neighbors, going to the casino and cutting coupons for her friends. Conrad was a member of the first graduating class of the Lorton Preparatory School in 1931. He attended Delgado in New Orleans and worked in that city for a short while with Merril Lynch. His love for Terrebonne Parish, fishing and hunting prompted his return to Houma in 1934. He was employed by Humble Oil (Standard) Oil, retiring after 30 years. He and family members grew and sold Easter Lilly bulbs on land later developed as Plantation Gardens. In addition he developed other properties in the Bayou Black area along Savanne Road and Lirette Street. In 1952, he formed the Conrad Lirette Boat company and later Bayou Barge Co., Inc. from which he operated his various businesses. He worked into his 80s, leasing land for various oil companies. Conrad Lirette was the first king of Hyacinthians and an original member of the Terraineans Carnival Club. He loved this parish and was honored to be elected police juror for Ward 9 for eight years from 1964-1972. He was proud to be a member of the Board of Directors of American Bank form 1967-1996. He was a parishioner and a former usher of St. Anthony of Padua Church and was a member of the Bayou Black Fire Department. His later years were spent quietly with his family bringing joy and love to each with his gentle and thoughtful manner. After completing active duty in 1957, he began work with the Terrebonne Parish Sheriff's Department as a uniformed patrol deputy until 1968. In July 1968 he began work with the Houma Police Department Uniform Car Patrol and was promoted to Patrolman First Class in 1970. He was promoted to Sergeant in 1978 and Lieutenant in 1981, serving as a detective and head of juvenile division. He achieved the rank of Captain in 1988, assuming the duties of watch commander and public relations officer, and served on the board of the Alcohol and Drug Abuse Council. During his years of service, he coordinated the efforts between the Houma Police Department and the Red Ribbon drug awareness campaign and is still ongoing in public schools. Please go to and click on the name of interest. ========== Lloyd J. "Capt. Lloyd" Price, 80, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family, at his home at 11:23 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 11, 2010. Jerry Villarrubia at 11 a.m. on Tuesday at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, with burial to follow in Terrebonne Memorial Park. Lloyd was born on Nov. 23, 1929, in Bourg to Sheldon and Lucille Price on the bank of the St. Louis Canal where the family lived in a large campboat. There, with his parents, eight brothers and one sister, the family lived the bayou life. He and his brothers learned to hunt, fish and trawl to help their father provide for the family. It may have been work, but Lloyd enjoyed trawling, fishing and hunting all of his life. Throughout their lives, Lloyd and his brothers enjoyed a healthy rivalry: who caught the most fish or shrimp, who had the faster boat, even down to who had the fastest lawn mower! There was always a good laugh at the end of those challenges, ending with the words, "I'll get you next time!" In 1951, he used his skills on the water at his first job as captain on the tug "Pelican." It was later that same year that he married the love of his life, Rose Amie LeBlanc. They have been married 59 years, together raising three daughters. In 1952, he went to work as a roughneck for Texaco. Though he had limited formal education, through his life experiences, hard work ethic and common sense approach to situations, he was able to rise from roughneck through the ranks to retire in 1987, as a toolpusher with 35 years of service with Texaco. He earned the respect of all who worked with him. His men called him a great boss, as he never asked them to do anything that he wouldn't do himself. Throughout his life he had various size boats that he used to trawl the bayou waters on his days off. The size of the boats grew with his success, culminating with the "Capt. Lloyd," his 52-foot skimmer. In preparation for his retirement from Texaco, he built the "Capt. Lloyd" in his backyard on the banks of Bayou Terrebonne. He and Rose skimmed the waters of Lake Pelto and beyond. Lloyd made sure the "Capt. Lloyd" had every convenience you could want on his boat: bathroom, running water, kitchen, plenty of food, comfortable sleeping quarters, country music in the tape machine and best of all air conditioning! With his natural mechanical ability, Lloyd's shed was a very popular place for anyone needing repairs on practically anything. He always had the right tool and was willing to lend a helping hand. Summers were spent at the camps that the brothers built on Trinity Bayou on Last Island, and Uncle Lloyd was always popular with his nieces and nephews as they stood in line to receive the wooden toy boats he built for them to pull the shallows on the beach. When asked how to do anything, he was patient in his explanations: no matter how many times that explanation had to be repeated! We have many fantastic memories of scouring the beaches for wood to build camps, wharves and find the "treasures" that washed up overnight, all of the brothers racing to Whiskey Pass for the mass held on the island for the Whiskey Pass Redfish Rodeo, flounder gigging at night at Last Island, chasing coons at night at the camp, pulling the girls skiing across Lake Pelto with the laughing admonishment, "one fall, you get back in the boat" (we didn't fall). He taught family members to throw a cast net, cast a fishing line to fish the beaches of Last Island. He taught his grandson to weld and made kites from newspaper and flour paste, the list could go on and on. Lloyd Price enjoyed a long and happy life and we were blessed to have had him as our dad, granddad, son, brother, friend and most of all loving husband. He was greatly loved and will be sadly missed. Mr. Streva, affectionately called J.J. to all who knew him, was born on April 9, 1965, in Morgan City. As an infant, he moved with his family to New Iberia, where he attended school and worked most of his life. From an early age, it became clear that J.J. was a natural athlete. From gymnastics to All Stars in Pony League and Colt League, he excelled. He was a member of the New Iberia Pee Wee Championship Football team, the New Iberia Packers. He attended Catholic High School and graduated in 1983. In his high school years, he continued to excel as an athlete. He lettered in football and baseball all three years of high school. And his senior year, he made 3rd team All-District in baseball. His true passion was Motor Cross racing. As a teenager and young adult he raced statewide successfully and twice won the State Championship in his division. After high school, he attended and graduated from Louisiana Southern Technical College. Thereafter he began his career of 23 years at Streva Distributing of New Iberia. As a salesman of Miller and Coors products, he serviced businesses throughout the Bayou Teche area. He was recognized on many occasions with sales awards. Recently, he had chosen to return to the University of Louisiana to finish a bachelor's degree in General Studies. He was currently a junior and was enjoying college with a newfound appreciation for knowledge. His mild manner and endearing personality graced him with many friends of all ages. Throughout his life, J.J. was the essence of "cool." He was a committed son and brother and was considered the "fun" uncle by all of his nieces and nephews. A devout Catholic all of his life, he was a parishioner of St. Pius X Catholic Church in Lafayette; while growing up in New Iberia, he was a parishioner of Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church. Visitation will be from 6 to 7 p.m. today at New Rocky Valley Church in Grambling with a funeral service held at 7 p.m. Dismissal service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the church, with burial at Harmony Baptist Cemetery in Arcadia. She is survived by her husband, the Rev. Curtis L. Willis Sr. of Arcadia; two sons, Curtis Willis Jr. of Arcadia and Minister Eric and wife, Rhonda Willis of Dallas; two daughters, Minister Joy and husband, Roderick Webb of Dallas, and Toby Jean-Jacques of Austin, Texas; three brothers, Charles Davis of California, Arthur Davis Jr. and the Rev. Billie Davis, both of Baton Rouge; two sisters, Elaine Madison, and Gloria Jean Gray, both of Baton Rouge; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, Martha Davis and Arthur A. Davis Sr.; and two brothers, Lawrence Davis and Harrell Davis. She was a member of Rocky Valley Baptist Church. She initiated many activities which encouraged young people to grow spiritually, mentally and emotionally. She was a retired educator in the Terrebonne Parish Schools in 1996. She was director of Plymouth Rock Jr. Choir, Senior Choir president, Sunday School teacher, Vacation Bible School teacher, director of Youth Chapter of NAACP, Terrebonne Muntu Club Sponsor, United Theological Seminary and Bible College Instructor, Women's Day Speaker, Socialites Club, Drama Teacher and directed (written numerous plays for church and the community) and LePetit Theatre De Terrebonne.
