He is the former owner of Haydel's Drug Store and Ronnie's Drug Store, and was a volunteer pharmacist for the St. Vincent de Paul Society. He was a member of the Louisiana Pharmacists Association, a member of the National Association of the Board of Pharmacy, a Fourth Degree member of the Knights of Columbus, a member of the Elks Club and a charter member of Ellendale Country Club. He was a former board member of the First National Bank and Whitney Bank, former President and board member of the Terrier Club at Vandebilt Catholic High School and was chosen as Alumnus of the Year in 1978. Besides the immense love he had for his family, Ronnie was greatly devoted and deeply passionate for Mardi Gras. He was a lifelong member, former President and King Terre XXVIII of the Krewe of Terreanians, and a lifelong member, former board member, and King Houmas LIV of the Krewe of Houmas. Also, he was a charter member of the Krewe of Hercules and a former member of the Krewe of Christopher. He was a parishioner of St. Francis de Sales Cathedral. Gerard Charles Hayes, 81, of Houma, passed away Wednesday, April 17, 2013 at his residence. He is survived by many nieces, nephews and numerous great-nieces and great-nephews. He was preceded in death by his siblings, Ann Haegeman, John Hayes, Denise (Billy) Hayes, Jane Waring, Joseph "Joe" Hayes, James "Jimmy" Hayes, Mary Soellner and Teresa Kopps. Father Hayes was born October 19, 1931, in Boston, Mass., son of the late John J. and Mary J. Kane Hayes. He was educated at Holy Trinity in Roxbury, Mass., Commerce High in Boston, Mass., Oblate Prep School in Newburgh, N.Y., Saint John's Seminary in Brighton, Mass., and Notre Dame Seminary in New Orleans. He was ordained a priest for the Archdiocese of Boston, June 4, 1960. After ordination, he returned to New Orleans to serve as Parochial Vicar of St. Louis King of France in Metairie from 1960 to 1965, St. Genevieve in Thibodaux from 1965 to 1966, and St. Leo the Great in New Orleans from 1966 to 1970. He then would serve as pastor of Holy Family in Grand Caillou from 1970 to 1972, and St. Anthony of Padua in Bayou Black from 1972 until his retirement in 2005. He originally came to the Archdiocese of New Orleans to study theology as a seminarian for the Archdiocese of Boston and a member of the Society of St. James the Apostle. After his ordination, Father Hayes returned to the Archdiocese of New Orleans as a missionary priest, and after completing his five years of service for the St. James Society, he was invited by Archbishop Philip Hannan to be incardinated in the Archdiocese. When the Diocese of Houma-Thibodaux was instituted in June 1977, Father Hayes, who was serving as pastor of St. Anthony in Bayou Black, chose to remain in the newly formed diocese and served until his retirement. Father Hayes faithfully lived out his priesthood for nearly 53 years. He loved the priesthood and encouraged others to pray for an increase in priestly vocations. In his memory, please pray for our priests and for an increase in vocations to the priesthood in the Diocese of Houma-Thibodaux and throughout the world. Shortly after, he attended Texas Southern University in Houston, Texas. In 1961, he began a long career with the U.S. Post Office, where he retired after 43 years of dedicated service. He was a native of Ellwood City, Penn., and a resident of Ft. Myers, Fla., prior to moving to Thibodaux. He was a long-time sufferer of Alzheimer's Disease and died peacefully in the home of his son, David and wife, Tracy Moon, where he resided for almost two and a half years. Filled with a competitive spirit and a giving heart, Ross enmeshed himself in every activity and cause in which he took part. As an accounting major at Nicholls State University, Ross served as a senator on student government, and ran on the men's cross country team, earning academic all-conference each year he competed. He was also a member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity and served as an orientation team leader. Ross was a 2009 graduate of Vandebilt Catholic High School where he earned male athlete of the year, was a state champion swimmer, an All-State cross country runner, president of the Key Club and a Wendy's Heisman recipient. As he bravely fought his own battle with cancer, Ross looked for ways to help others with similar struggles. This led to him founding the Ross Mullooly Project, a non-profit organization benefiting the Patrick Taylor Hope Lodge and providing a variety of supports for cancer patients and their families.
