Orleans and resident of Houma, died Sunday, July 21, 2013. Visitation will
be from 5 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Samart Funeral Home and from 9 a.m. until
funeral time Thursday at Holy Family Catholic Church in Dulac. A Mass of
Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the church, with burial in
Holy Family Catholic Church cemetery in Dulac. He is survived by his wife,
Cheryl H. Parfait; daughters, Desiree "Dumbo" Melancon and husband, Michael,
and Tennie "Sweet Pea" Pledger and husband, Chucky; brothers, James "T-Neg"
Paul and wife, Cheryl, and Angelo Parfait and wife, Reyes; sisters, Barbara
Fitch and husband, "Boogie," Bessie Jackson and husband, "Peanut," Beverly
Billiot and husband "Mack," Patricia "Chenia" Verdin and husband, Richard,
Cindy Verdin and husband, "Regis," Angelie "Pokey" Parfait and husband,

Francie Lydie Parr, 45, a native of New Orleans and resident of Houma, died
Saturday, June 29, 2013. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
She is survived by her sisters, Patti Parr Kaikko and husband, Victor, and
Sherri Parr; and numerous nieces, nephews and great-nieces and nephews. She
was preceded in death by her parents, Ernest Parr and Eula "Mickey" Colwort
Parr. She enjoyed Mardi Gras and was a past Queen at Chateau Terrebonne in
2011. She was an avid Saints and LSU Tigers fan. She loved her family and

Melville Perrin, 82, a native of Golden Meadow and resident of Gray, died
Saturday, July 27, 2013. No services are scheduled at this time. He is
survived by his sister, Emilia Galliano. He was preceded in death by his
wife, Patricia Flannagan Perrin; parents, Etienne Perrin and Emilia Crosby
Perrin; daughter, Patti Perrin; and sister, Cecile Perrin.He was a member of
Masonic Lodge No. 427, a veteran of the Korean Conflict and a lifetime

Jerry A. Plaisance Sr., 81, was born May 30, 1932, in Golden Meadow to the
union of John B. and Oceania Melancon Plaisance and departed from this life
Tuesday, July 2, 2013, at his residence in Larose. Visitation will be from
noon until funeral time Friday at Our Lady of the Rosary Catholic Church in
Larose. A Mass of Christian burial will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the church,
with burial in Our Lady of the Rosary Catholic Church cemetery in Larose. He
is survived by his wife of almost 59 years, Loretta B. Plaisance; children,
Ricky Plaisance and wife, Donna Cantrelle, Terrie Plaisance Crosby and
husband, the Rev. Mark, Joy Plaisance Danos and husband, Allan, and Jerry A.
Plaisance Jr. and wife, Karen Bolton; brother, Russell Plaisance and wife,
Janet Compeaux; 10 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren and one soon to
arrive; and a host of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his
parents; sister, Lou Acosta; and a great-grandchild. He was a lifelong
resident of Larose, and lived the past nine month between his daughters in
Livingston Parish. He was a retired fisherman and had worked on oil rigs and
served in the U.S. Armed Forces. á € He was a member of the Knights of
Columbus and Our Lady of the Rosary Catholic Church. He enjoyed music,
playing the guitar, genealogy and gardening. He had a passion for drawing
and writing. Pallbearers will be: Chris Crosby, Lance Danos, Kelly
Plaisance, Brandon Plaisance, Jerry Plaisance Jr. and Ricky Plaisance.
Honorary pallbearers will be Benjamin Plaisance and Paul Plaisance. Seale

James E. Pledger Sr., 66, of Hull, Texas, passed away Sunday, July 14, 2013,

preceded in death by her parents, Johnny and Rose Richard Rivet. Darlene and
her husband, Bruce, loved to play pool, and Darlene was quite the player.

green thumb and enjoyed growing beautiful ivies for her home. She will be
greatly missed by those who knew and loved her, which included her

RIVERE, DERRICK D.

Derrick D. Rivere, 39, a native of Oceanside, Calif., and resident of Gray,
La., died Sunday, June 30, 2103. Mr. Rivere was a self-taught musician with
the band Kerizma. He was born with muscular dystrophy and was diagnosed to
be a non-functioning child from birth. As time went by, he booked Kerizma at
local bars and clubs, festivals, private events, casinos and as an opening
act for many professional groups. He gained the respect and friendship of
many and his nonjudgmental disposition offered more than just a smile – it
always offered a welcoming feeling to everyone. His first real love was
music and the feeling he got from making people happy. He is survived by his
parents, Kenneth Sr. and Carolyn Rivere; grandparents, Harry and Marie
Rivere and Hazel Cavalier; daughter, Heaven Rivere; brother, Kenneth Jr.
(Lydia) Rivere; and sisters, Renee (Kevin) King and Brittany Rivere. He was
preceded in death by his grandparents, Elwood and Elizabeth Billiot.

SAINT, VERNON DAWSON

On April 12, 2013 one of the loveliest ladies who graced the banks of Bayou
LaFourche, Vernon Louis Dawson Saint, passed away in her home surrounded by
dear friends, Nobbie Ordogne, Edmond Adams, Barbara Ledet, and devoted
caregivers, Angela Morrison, Renee Kimble, and Iris DeLatte. A celebration
of her life and spirit will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday, August 3, 2013, at
the Dansereau House at 506 St. Philip Street in Thibodaux. Vernon is
survived by her two sisters, Eleanor Gour, of New Orleans, and Barbara
Currier, of New York; two nieces, Denise Gour and Henrietta Currier; nephew,
Tom Currier; two grandnieces, Ariel and Phoebe; two grandnephews Ry and
Finn; as well as cousins, Sherry Johnson, and Jeanine, Joey, Luke and Tessa
Wilson. Vernon was first of four children, born July 27, 1922, in Norco to
Corrine Estelle Bates and Louis Walter Dawson of Mississippi. She attended
Destrehan High School and graduated from Soulé College in New Orleans. She
earned her nickname "Butch" for her cavalier, positive, no-whining-allowed
attitude when on a Lake Pontchartrain sailing date, the pair ended up
drenched in mud. And Butch didn't complain to her very last breath; she knew
how special her life experience was, with each person and each moment. Her
generous heart and kind advice drew friends and family close to her. Working
as a secretary in Lafayette, she spoiled her younger siblings with presents
and movie money every weekend when she came home to New Orleans. She had a
wonderful deep bond with her sisters and their families. Both sisters
visited often and each was lucky to have spent a lot of time with Butch up
until her passing. In 1946, Vernon was married to Archie Saint after his
return from the Pacific where he served in the U.S. Navy during World War
II. They settled in Thibodaux, where they built their home and began a life
dedicated to family, friends, and the Thibodaux community. She was
predeceased by her husband, who served as Judge of Thibodaux for more than
20 years. Vernon was devoted to her only son, Charles Saint, a NSU graduate
whose talents lay in restoring beautiful historic homes in New Orleans until
his untimely death from cancer in 2000. When Vernon sold the New Orleans Bed
and Breakfast her son had restored to John Crew and Gil Rome, they said they
were lucky because the home came with a mother. Many of Charlie's friends
and neighborhood children lucky enough to grow up near Vernon recall her
generous, warm heart and sensible advice often referring to her as their
"second mama." Vernon worked with her husband to establish and grow his law
practice and supported his campaigns for City Judge. When her son was young,
she taught at nursery school because the hours allowed her to raise her son.
Later she became a research assistant at the NSU library. Once retired from
NSU in 1987, then Mayor Warren Harange hired her, he was well familiar with
her accomplished administrative professional skills, as well as her gentle
grace, humor, and ability to exude a level headed calm under pressure.
Throughout her long life Vernon generously volunteered her skills for a
variety of organizations including Thibodaux's First Presbyterian Church,
Thibodaux Regional Hospital, and the New Comer's Club in Thibodaux. Vernon
was a dedicated yoga student for more than 30 years, and also a devote of
Pilates. She loved to travel and she had taken trips with her sister,
Eleanor, to Miami, with her sister, Barbara, to the Caribbean and Europe,
visiting family in Natchez, Portland, San Francisco, New York, Virginia,
Napa and Nantucket. A clothes horse, she loved shopping at Thibodaux's House
of Fashion. Actually her whole extended family loves shopping at the House
of Fashion; Sheila Boudreau has dressed us all. And who can forget the Holy
Hour at Angelina Mitchell's with her daughters, Angela and Linda, Frankie
Jones, and other dear friends, like Dot Kleinpeter!Vernon had cut a rug many
times at the Dansereau House when the Caldwells owned it and held grand
dinner parties with live bands and dancing till dawn; we look forward to
seeing friends there and hearing your stories of Vernon Saint. Landry's

Challenge Ethan Talbot unexpectedly passed into the arms of The Lord on July
19, 2013 at the age of 18. Challenge was a recent graduate of E.D. White
High School and was to attend LSU in the fall. Challenge was a Christian and
a member of First Baptist Church in Houma, LA. Challenge lived a life as
unique as his name. Challenge hunted with his father, skied and golfed with
his brothers, fished with his grandfather and adored his family and many
friends who knew Challenge as "Batman." Challenge was a Boy Scout as a child
and was always an avid outdoorsman. Challenge was a member of the E.D. White
Swim Team where he was an all- state swimmer for four years. Challenge
received countless awards at state swim meets and set school records for
E.D. White. Challenge was selected for and attended Boys State in behalf of
E.D. White and was also a member of the National Honors Society. Challenge
was the beloved son of Mitchell Charles Talbot and Kimberly Ann Desmares
Talbot; brother of Nikole Leigh Talbot Paquette, Dustin Charles Talbot, and
Connor Charles Talbot; grandson of Charles and Linda Hartzog Desmares and
Margie Talbot; nephew of Michael and Cindy Desmares, Gemma and Dan Svensson,

UTLEY, MERRILL HOLLAND, JR.

Merrill Holland Utley Jr. 87, of Thibodaux, died Sunday July 7 2013. He was
born to the late Merrill Sr. and Martha Withers Utley, Aug. 26, 1925 in
Jackson , Miss. Mr. Utley was a Navy veteran who received a BS in Electrical
Engineering from Mississippi State University in addition to attending
Tulane University in New Orleans. He is survived by his wife Shirley Utley
also of Thibodaux. Merrill relocated to Leeville, La. after graduation where
he worked for 15 years. As Chevron's transportation superintendent, Mr.
Utley became instrumental in the development of Louisiana's oil patch as
chronicled in the book "Cajun Mariners" by Woody Falgoux. Mr. Utley is
credited as one of the key personalities involved in the design of the
oilfield workboat or "Botruc" used all over the world today. In 1964 Merrill
and wife Martha "Sowell" moved to Thibodaux where he owned and was C.E.O of
Delta Well Logging Services retiring in the early 90's. In Merrill's later
years he would be known for his work in bringing the Acadian Cultural Center
to Thibodaux which housed the Martha S Utley Library, Jean Lafitte National
Historical Park and the Thibodaux Playhouse Inc. Merrill was a member of St.
John’s Episcopal church, Rotary Club, a Freemason, traveler and an avid
pilot. He was the 1982 recipient of the Francis M. Durel Award given by the
Thibodaux VFW for outstanding service to the community. Merrill was preceded
in death by his wife Martha Sowell Utley and is survived by three children:
Martha Holland Utley, of New York, Merrill Utley III and Robert Utley both
of Thibodaux; He also is survived by five grandchildren, one great-grandson
and three sisters. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that
donations be made out to St. Johns Episcopal church or the Thibodaux Friends
of the Library. Visitation will be Thursday July11 at St John ᤀs Episcopal
Church in Thibodaux beginning at 9a.m. with services following at 11a.m. and

Alexandria, Louisiana on April 23, 1933. He graduated from Bolton High
School in 1951.He attended Louisiana State University and received a B. S.
Degree in Business Administration on January 29, 1957. He received a Juris
Doctorate Degree from Louisiana State University Law School on May 30, 1959.
He was admitted to practice in 1959 before all Louisiana Courts, the United
States Supreme Court, the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth
Circuit, as well as the United States District Courts for the Eastern and
Western Districts. He is a member of the Terrebonne Bar Association, the
Louisiana Bar Association and the Louisiana Trial Lawyers Associated. Four
of his children, Joe, Jr., Mary, John & Douglas, followed in his footsteps
and graduated from law school. Deborah (Debbie) is a legislative aide to
Rep. Gordon Dove, David is a civil engineer and Michelle is a school teacher
and real estate agent. Among his many awards is The Elton Darsey Lifetime
Achievement Award presented by the Terrebonne Bar Association in June 2010,
in recognition of years of service to the practice of law and establishing a
higher level of legal professionalism through his devotion to the Court and
his alliance with other members of the Bar Association. He also received a
Certificate of Appreciation from Catholic Social Services for service and
contribution to the Catholic Social Services Board of Directors. He also
served as a member of the LSU Board of Regents and was later appointed to
serve as a member of the LSU Board of Supervisors for many years beginning
in April of 1991. Additionally, he was honored in 2011 by the LSU Law Center
for his years of service to the legal profession. He was a man of
unshakeable faith who devoted his entire life to God. He was a long-time
parishioner of St. Francis de Sales Cathedral. His greatest joy in life was
being surrounded by his family, and he always showed a proud smile at every
family gathering. He was a kind-hearted and generous man, always giving his
all to anyone in need, and he never missed an opportunity to make a joke or
pull a prank on those he loved. The family would like to express sincere
gratitude to Dr. Russell Henry, Eugene Nguyen, Jeremy Chiasson, his private
caregivers, and the staff of Bayou Home Care for their compassionate care,
going far beyond the call of duty. A special thanks to his faithful bridge
