Anthony Sr. - Madison Parish, Louisiana From Tallulah Madison Journal, November 16, 1988 Memorial services for former Tallulah Mayor Dr. Leander A. Anthony Sr., 71, will be held Thursday at 7 p.m. at St. Matthew A.M.E. Church. Funeral services will be held Friday at noon at St. Matthew. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery under direction of Madison Mortuary. Dr. Anthony died Monday in Mississippi Baptist Hospital in Jackson, Ms. after a lengthy illness. Dr. Anthony served as mayor of Tallulah from 1978-1986. He was chairman of the Madison Parish Port Commission from 1983-1988 and had been a member of that commission since 1972. He was a veteran of World War II. A native of Tensas Parish, Dr. Anthony received his B.S. degree in Agriculture Education from Southern University in Baton Rouge. He later received a degree from the Tuskegee Institute School of Veterinary Medicine. He established a veterinary practice in Tallulah in 1950 and continued its operation until his illness earlier this year. Dr. Anthony was active in numerous organizations. He was vice-president of the board of directors of North Delta Regional Planning District, Director of the JTPA Program in 10 area parishes, served on the city bi-racial committee and was chairman of the DCAA board of directors. He was a steward, trustee and treasurer of St. Matthew Church, a member of Omega Psi Phi fraternity, Elks, Masons and other social and civic organizations. He received numerous awards, including Omega Man of the Year, Outstanding Citizen Award, Tuskegee Service Award and Alpha Kappa Alpha Distinguished Citizen Award. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Evelyn Minor Anthony of Tallulah; one daughter, Elizabeth Anthony of Atlanta, Ga.; one son, Leander A. Anthony Jr. of Tallulah; one brother, Edward Holt of St. Joseph; and one grandchild.
