Bloom - Madison Parish, Louisiana From Tallulah Madison Journal, January 7, 1966 Funeral Services Held On Tuesday or Mertie M. Bloom in Vicksburg;Was Active In Many Civic Enterprises Funeral services for Mertie M. Bloom, 70, prominent Tallulah resident for many years, who died Sunday night in a Vicksburg hospital after an illness of several days, were held Tuesday at 10:00 m. at Fisher Funeral Chapel in Vicksburg with Rabbi Sylvan Wolf of Monroe officiating. Burial followed in the Jewish Cemetery in Vicksburg. Mr. Bloom was born in Rochester, N. Y., on March 15, 1895, moving to Louisiana as a young boy, he was graduated from Tallulah High School in May of 1913, then attended the New Orleans College of Pharmacy which was affiliated with Loyola University and was graduated with the Ph. G. degree in May, 1915. He became a registered pharmacist on May 28, 1915. After graduation Mr. Bloom worked at the Tullos Drug Co., in Mooringsport., La., and then in the Tallulah Drug Co. In 1916, he organized the Bloom-Sevier Drug Co. Mr. Bloom was active in civic enterprises, belonging to the following organizations: Forty and Eight, American Legion, Masonic Order, Shrine and Consistory, B'nai B'rith, Associated Charities of Madison Parish, life member of Tallulah Golf Club, director of tae Tallulah State Bank and Trust Co., former member of the Madison Parish Police Jury for 12 years and member of the Fifth District Louisiana Levee Board for four years. He was appointed to the Louisiana State Board of Pharmacy on April 5, 1949 by Gov. Earl K. Long and was a member of this board from 1949 until 1964. He received his fifty-year Golden Pharmacy Certificate in June 1965. Mr. Bloom was a member of Anshe Chesed Temple and was active in charitable activities. He was in charge of the Air raid Warning System Service of Madison Parish in World War II. He was also active in real estate circles having built Bloom's Arcade building in 1930 which contains 13 separate stores and a motion picture theatre. He developed two residential sub-divisions in Tallulah. He is survived by three sisters, Miss Ida Bloom, Mrs. Mildred Kern and Mrs. Jeannie Saiewitz; a brother, Ralph Bloom, all of Tallulah and a number of nieces and nephews. Active pallbearers were the following nephews of Mr. Bloom: Reynold S. Minsky, Louis L.Minsky, Leon A. Minsky, Arnold Abramson, James David Caldwell, Al Jolson, Herbert Ginsburg and Michael Silver. Honorary pallbearers were officers and directors of the Tallulah State Bank and Trust Co.
