Bodron - Madison Parish, Louisiana From Memphis, TN Commercial Appeal February 19, 1997 Ellis B. Bodron, who was a fixture around the Mississippi Capitol for 48 years, 36 of them as a lawmaker, died Monday of brain cancer at Mississippi Baptist Medical Center in Jackson. He was 73. Funeral services are tentatively set for Thursday in Vicksburg. He practiced law in his native Vicksburg for 50 years before being stricken with a brain tumor. For the past 12 years, Bodron, who was blind, was one of the more visible lobbyists for the liquor, health care and insurance industries and tobacco interests. He was elected to the Mississippi House in 1948 and joined the Senate four years later. He was named Finance Committee chairman in 1964 by then-Lt. Gov. Carroll Gartin. He continued as chairman until he left the Senate in 1984 after losing a bid for re-election. Bodron ran for Congress in 1972, winning the Democratic nomination but losing in the general election to Republican Thad Cochran, now a U.S. senator. He is survived by his wife, Jane Workman Bodron of Vicksburg; a son, Lawrence E. Bodron of Vicksburg; a daughter, Helen E. Bodron of Washington, and three sisters.
