Team effort solves murder A "team effort" was instrumental in solving last week's murder of Glenn Ray Ezell, according to Sammie Byrd. Ezell, 32, died in the Madison Parish Hospital from a gunshot wound he received after pursuing a man who had stolen some bananas from the back of Ezell's wife's pick-up truck last Wednesday evening, said Byrd. On Sunday morning Augustus Kimple, a 17-year-old black male, and a 15-year-old female juvenile confessed to being involved in the shooting and were charged with second degree murder, according to Byrd. Kimple, of 414 Jackson St., is being held in the Madison Parish Jail on $100,000 bond set by Sixth District Judge Alwine M. Ragland, and the girl has been released into the custody of her mother by the court pending a hearing, according to Byrd. Madison Parish Sheriff R. R. Mitchell said he called former Chief Criminal Investigator Byrd off of the campaign trail to help solve the crime because his department was short-handed. Byrd said he was on leave from the sheriff's department while he campaigned for election as Sheriff. Byrd credited the Louisiana State Police detectives, the Madison Parish Sheriff's Office, the Tallulah Police Department and the Sixth District Attorney's office for their help in solving the murder case quickly. According to Byrd, TPD officer Billy Guice received the information that helped solve the crime. Guice said he reconstructed the sequence of events from the several witnesses. According to Byrd, Ezell was parking his pick-up truck at Jr. Xxxxx on Hwy. 80 next to his wife's truck full of vegetables. Ezell had entered the store to make a purchase. According to witnesses, Kimple took some bananas and ran down the railroad tracks and Ezell made a chase in his truck. Ezell stopped the truck and started running after the thief, Byrd said. According to witnesses, Ezell caught the suspect on the tracks, an argument ensued and gunshots were fired. Ezell received one bullet wound from what is believed to be a small caliber weapon, said Byrd. "A tip led us to the weapon believed to have been used by the suspect and we recovered it from behind the seat in the suspect's father's pick-up truck," said Byrd. According to Byrd, both Kimple and the juvenile girl were picked up in Tallulah on Saturday night and confessed early Sunday morning. "Kimple admitted to pulling the trigger," said Byrd. Ezell's body was transported to Shreveport for an autopsy, according to Byrd, but the results have not been returned. "It was very much a team effort," said Byrd.
