All rights reserved. ************************************************************************************************ Melvin "Pete" Finlayson - Madison Parish, Louisiana From Tallulah Madison Journal, September 8, 1967 Funeral Services Held On Monday For Melvin "Pete" Finlayson Who Died Of Heart Attack; Was Voter Registrar Funeral services for Melvin (Pete) Finlayson, Madison Parish Registrar of Voters and former employee of the Journal who died last Friday night after suffering a massive heart attack were held Monday morning at 10 a. m. at the Tallulah Methodist Church, with the Rev. Clark Bell officiating. Interment followed at 2 p. m. at the Oaklawn Cemetery in Monticello, Arkansas with Old Southern Mortuary in charge. "Pete" (as he was known to his many friends) died last Friday night a few hours after suffering a heart attack at the Madison Parish Hospital. He was elected Justice of the Peace in 1964; and was appointed Registrar of Voters a short while afterwards. He was a Steward in the Tallulah Methodist Church, and was active in many church and civic activities, including the new Delta Christian School which opened Tuesday. He had suffered a heart ailment since early childhood, and was one of the first in this area to undergo open heart surgery. He had his first heart operation at the age of 16, and had returned a few years ago for another. Both were performed at Johns Hopkins University Hospital in Baltimore. He was a graduate of Tallulah High School and had attended Northeast State College in Monroe and Louisiana College in Pineville. He is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Finlayson, Tallulah; two brothers, Billy Finlayson, Tallulah; and Bobbie Finlayson of Norfolk, Va.; his grandmother, Mrs. Jessie Mae Finlayson of Monticello, Arkansas, and other relatives. Pallbearers were Tommy Erwin, Billy Post, Richard Powell, J. O. Pemberton, J. C. Sherwin and Barton Sevier.
