Hester - Madison Parish, Louisiana From Tallulah Madison Journal, February 3, 1988 A memorial service for Mr. Clifton E. Hester, 97, will be held Thursday at the First Baptist Church in Tallulah with Rev. John Rushing officiating. Burial will be at Providence Memorial Park Cemetery under direction of Crothers Funeral Home. Mr. Hester died Sunday, one day after his 97th birthday, following a lengthy illness. He served as Madison Parish Sheriff for 24 years, retiring in 1968. Mr. Hester was born in Farmerville Jan. 30, 1891. He received a degree in agriculture at LSU in 1913 and taught horticulture at S.L.I. nowUSL in Lafayette until 1916. He was director of the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture Experiment Station in Calhoun for two years, moving to East Carroll Parish as director of the Agricultural Extension Service in 1920. His next move was to Transylvania in 1923, where he managed a cotton plantation. Ile moved to Madison Parish in 1935 as extension service director, where he served until election as sheriff in 1944. After retiring in 1968, he returned to his horticulture interests, which were well-known throughout the community. His civic activities were many and varied. He was a charter member of the Tallulah Rotary Club, a former chairman of the Madison Parish Library Board, a Mason, a member of the First Baptist Church. During his tenure as sheriff, he served as president of the Louisiana Sheriff's Association, and was a member of the Sheriff's Pension Xxxxx and the Louisiana Peace Officers Association. His wife of 71 years, the former Marie Gueydan preceded him in death on Oct. 8, 1987. He is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Mercedes Eichholz of Santa Ynez, Calif.; 2 grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild. Pallbearers were C. C. Adams, Edgar Lancaster, Jack Millikin, Louis Tonore, Clayton Cox and Harvey Mounger.
