V. W. F. Jefferson - Madison Parish, Louisiana

From Tallulah Madison Journal, November 9, 1951

V. W. F. Jefferson Killed In Car Wreck Saturday

Mr. Volcane Walter Francis Jefferson, 74-year-old Madison Parish resident, succumbed to injuries received
Saturday afternoon, November 3rd, in a head-on collision west of Tallulah, according to a report from the
Madison Parish Sheriff's Department.

The report stated that Jefferson, traveling west in a 1950 Ford Coupe, apparently intending to turn off US
Highway 80 at Quebec on the J. I. Roberts gravel road, pulled over into the left lane about 50 feet from
the intersection. A 1949 Ford 1 1/2-ton truck, driven by Dewel McWilliams of Clinton, Miss., traveling east,
pulled off to the right of the highway, to avoid hitting Jefferson, and the right wheels of the truck were
on the shoulder of the road when the collision occurred. Jefferson died a few minutes later.

McWilliams was charged with negligent homicide.

Mr. Jefferson, a native of Huntington, W. Va., was a well known game warden and farmer of near Tendal, having
resided in this community for the past 34 years.

Funeral services were conducted Monday afternoon at Crothers Funeral Chapel at 2:30 o'clock with the Rev. D. L.
O'Neal officiating. Interment followed in the Delhi Masonic Cemetery.

Besides his wife, Mrs. Carrie Jefferson, he is survived by one son, Tom Jefferson, Tallulah; one daughter,
Mrs. Mary J. Ragsdale, Dumas, Ark. ; three grandchildren, one great grandchild; one brother, Millard Jefferson,
Aulden, Ill.
