All rights reserved. ************************************************************************************* John David Lee - Madison Parish, Louisiana From Mobile (AL) Press-Register, January 31, 2010 LEE John David Lee-native of Louisiana and long time resident of Mobile, AL died yesterday surrounded by family and loved ones. He was born November 23, 1941 to James Clifford Lee and Mary Ellis Chapman Lee of Tallulah, LA. He is predeceased by his parents and his older brother, James C. (Buddy) Lee, Jr. Following his graduation from Tallulah High School, David began his undergraduate education at Mississippi College in Jackson, MS with an academic scholarship in Music. He pursued his love of music through the piano, the guitar and as first trumpet in the Mississippi College Band. While in college he distinguished himself in the science curriculum and became an undergraduate instructor in his majors Chemistry and Zoology. In 1963 he was awarded a BS in Chemistry from Mississippi College, accepted into LSU School of Medicine and inducted into the United States Air Force Reserve. Following his receipt of the Doctor of Medicine degree in 1967 from LSU, he completed a rotating internship in the Charity Hospital system at Confederate Memorial Medical Center in Shreveport, LA. In 1963 he came to Mobile, AL to begin a 4 year residency in General Surgery. In 1974 he was name Chief Resident of Surgery at the University of South Alabama Medical Center and in 1972 completed his residency. In June of that year, he married Margaret (Peggy) Eileen McGinnis, a native of Mobile, AL. Two months later, they traveled together to Misawa AFB, Japan, where David began a voluntary 31 month assignment with USAF Intelligence, Area IV, as Chief of Surgery. He remained in the inactive military reserves with the USAF until he resigned his commission in 1993. In 1975, he began a private medical practice in Mobile specializing in general surgery. He was Clinical Assistant Professor of Surgery at USA Medical Center from 1975 to 1981 and was on the active staff of all the local hospitals. He received numerous professional honors and his surgical career was highlighted as both Chief of Surgery and as President of the Medical Staff at Springhill Memorial Hospital. He retired from the practice of general surgery in 2001 and later began a second career in administrative medicine. At the time of his death he served the State of Alabama Department of Mental Health and Mental Retardation as the Director of Medical Services for Searcy Hospital. For over 20 years he was a parading member of one of Mobile's older mystic societies. He earned an instrument rated private pilot's license and enjoyed his own plane, motorcycle riding and target shooting with his daughter. For decades he was a well respected member and leader of Mobile's Recovery Member in AA. Surviors include his wife of 37 years, Peggy McGinnis Lee, his daughter Dr. Jamie Denise Lee and his son John David Lee, both of Las Vegas, NV. Additional survivors are his brothers, Dr. William Chapman Lee (Cherie) and Edwin Ellis Lee, both of Baton Rouge, LA. His brothers and sister-in-law Mary McGinnis Leslie (Bill) of Atlanta, GA; Cathernie McGinnis Pierce (Jim) of Evinston, FL; Henry Michael McGinnis of Hartford, CT; David Martin McGinnis (Nancy) of Charlotte, NC; Beth McGinnis Schroeder (Will) of Salida, CO and numerouse nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held at Pinecrest Cemetery on Monday evening from 5 to 8 pm with a graveside service on Tuesday at 1:30 pm. Interment will be in Pinecrest Cemetery.
