All rights reserved. ************************************************ Oran C. Lewis - Madison Parish, Louisiana From Tallulah Madison Journal, May 11, 2006 Oran C. Lewis was born on March 19, 1914, in Alto, Texas, and died on April 24, 2006, at the Richardson Medical Center in Rayville at the age of 92. He was a member of the Winnsboro Church of Christ. Mr. Lewis is survived by his wife of 71 years, Aline T. Lewis of Delhi; one daughter, Bobbie Cupit of Delhi; and one son, Jerry Lewis and his wife Patsy of Monroe. He is also survived by six grandchildren, Theresa Hendrix and husband Ricky of Winnfield, Cindy Swenson and husband Marshall of Charleston, South Carolina, Kevin Cupit of Mims, Florida, Kevin Sumlin of Monroe, Dean Lewis of Houston, Texas and Dodd and Kathy Lewis of Monroe. Also surviving are seven great grandchildren, Sarah Cupitof Mims, Florida, Elizabeth and Holly Hendrix of Winnfield, Sean and Claire Sumlin and Brandon and Dylan Lewis all of Monroe, one brother Clinton Lewis and wife Clotelle of Bastrop; numerous nieces and nephews and a host of friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, W. S. and Christian Lewis and five brothers and three sisters. Oran and Aline, along with their children, moved to the Warsaw Community in Madison Parish in 1947 and began farming. He lived there until his death. He went to work for the Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries in 1951 as a state Game Warden. After retiring from this he became a full time deputy sheriff in Madison Parish and retired after over 20 years of service. He also served as a Justice of the Peace for a number of years. Mr. Lewis was a member of the Crowville Masonic Lodge for over 50 years and was a 32nd Degree Mason. He was a charter member of the Macon Ridge Shrine Club and also the Barak Shrine Temple in Monroe. He was also a member of the Scottish Rite and the York Rite bodies of Masonry. Mr. Lewis spent his retirement years supporting the burned and crippled children through the work of the Shrine. He was passionate about raising money to help these children. He loved the Shrine Circus and worked tirelessly for it for as many years as his health permitted. He embodied the Shrine Code, "No man ever stood so tall as when he stooped to help a crippled child." Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, April 27, at the Winnsboro Church of Christ on the Fort Necessity Highway, Winnsboro. Services were conducted by the Reverend Karl Huff and the Reverend Marion Collier. Interment followed in the Mulhearn Memorial Park Cemetery in Monroe under the direction of Cox Funeral Home of Delhi. Grandsons served as pallbearers. The family wishes to express their appreciation to Dr. Hubbard, the nurses and staff of Richardson Medical Center in Rayville and to United Home Health Care and especially Diane who gave such loving care to Mr. Lewis for many years. A special thank you also goes out to the many friends and neighbors who have been so loving and helpful during the past few years. Any planned memorials may be made to the Winnsboro Church of Christ.
