McClellan - Madison Parish, Louisiana From Tallulah Madison Journal, February 16, 1924 Mr. James T. McClellan passed away Thursday morning at the Sanitarium in Vicksburg following an attack of double pneumonia. Just a short time ago Mr. McClellan contacted a severe cold which hung on persistently and he went to the Sanitarium so that he would be sure to get proper care and attention - even though the illness was considered extremely mild. After reaching the Sanitarium he improved steadily and when about ready to return about a week ago was taken suddenly very ill, and ever since, even though everything possible was done for him, it was considered very doubtful that he would recover. Mr. McClellan at the time of his death was 71 years of age and for practically all his life had been a resident of Madison Parish during which time he has been identified with large planting and mercantile interests. During his early life here he was in partnership with different citizens of the parish, his last partnership being with the late Mr. W. M. Scott, Sr. Shortly before Mr. Scott's death Mr. McClellan sold his interests to Mr. Scott and retired from business into which he never reentered. He has, however, for a number of years been, and at the time of his death was, President of the Tallulah State Bank. Besides having been prominent in the business of the parish he was also active politically, and not a few citizens of the parish looked to him as their leader. He was at one time Sheriff of the parish, but probably his greatest work was as President of the Board of Commissioners of the Fifth Louisiana Levee District. Mr. McClellan was appointed to this position at a time when the levee system was not recognized by the government, and there was no such thing as government aid on the levees. We can truthfully say that this position he filled exceptionally well, and in his days he was looked upon as an expert on levee protection and construction, as he studied the subject and made himself familiar with its every phase. Though not associated with the Levee Board in recent years, it was not infrequent that he was called upon for advice in levee matters or to make levee inspections. Mr. McClellan is survived by his wife, Dora McLean, his daughter, Miss Katie McClellan, as well as by two sisters, Miss Cora McClellan and Mrs. Chas. Coltharp of Tallulah, a nephew, Major B. F. McClelland of Jackson, Miss., and a niece, Mrs. N. V. Fletcher of Vicksburg and a number of other relatives to whom the Journal offers its sympathy in their great loss. The remains were brought to Tallulah yesterday morning and the funeral services were held at the home of Mrs. V. K. Scott. The body, accompanied by relatives, was taken last night to Cincinnati for interment.
