John Truman Moore, Jr., 3-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. J. T. Moore, of Corpus Christi, Texas, drowned accidentally Tuesday (3/28/1950) afternoon in a cesspool at the home of his grandmother, Mrs. L. S. Gardner, in the Bluefront Community. Returning from town with his parents Tuesday afternoon, John went into the yard to play with neighboring children, and was missed some time later by his parents, who with neighbors, began searching. He was discovered in the cesspool a short distance from the house by two negro women. The cesspool apparently had been covered over with boards and dirt, and being rotted, the boards gave way under the youngster's weight. Mr. and Mrs. Moore and son had been visiting Mrs. Moore's mother, Mrs. L. S. Gardner. Funeral services were held Thursday afternoon at the Tallulah Methodist Church, with the Rev. J. F. Kilpatrick officiating. Burial followed under the direction Crothers Funeral Home in the Silver Cross Cemetery. Pall bearers were: J. C. Byram, P. M. Copes, Charles Abrahms, Aubrey Covington. Honorary pall bearers were J. C. Hedgepeth, John Watts, Rupert Harmon, J. T. Roy. He is survived by his parents Mr. and Mrs. J. T. Moore, Corpus Christi, Texas; his maternal grandmother, Mrs. L. S. Gardner Tallulah; his paternal grandmother Mrs. Edna M. Moore, Siton, Texas, ten uncles and aunts. From Vicksburg Evening Post March 29, 1950 RITES THURSDAY FOR YOUNG CHILD WHO DROWNED Accident Occurs At Grandmother's Tallulah Home TALLULAH, La., March 29-Funeral services will be held Thursday at the Tallulah Methodist Church for a three-year-old lad who drowned yesterday afternoon at the home of his grandmother, Mrs. L. S. Gardner, on the old Tallulah-Vicksburg highway nine miles east of Tallulah. The child, John Truman Moore, Jr., whose parents live at Corpus Christi, Tex., was drowned when the top of a cesspool caved under his weight. He dropped through the narrow hole, and frantic family and neighbors searched for thirty minutes before they discovered the body. Efforts at resuscitation, including use of a portable iron lung, were fruitless. According to information available on the tragedy, the child had just returned from Tallulah with his grandmother. He stayed in the yard to play while she took her packages inside, and when she returned to the yard, he had disappeared. She called, then summoned neighbors who searched in vain for the little tot. Two negro women chanced to see the hole in the ground and peered in with a flashlight to find his body. The Rev. John F. Kilpatrick, pastor of the Tallulah Methodist Church, will officiate at the services. The definite hour has not been set, awaiting the arrival of the child's parents. Interment will be in the Silver Cross Cemetery, with the Crothers Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. The pallbearers will be J. C. Byram, P. M. Copes, Charles Abrahm and Aubrey Covington.
