Colonel John Fitzpatrick Payne, 48, who died suddenly yesterday morning while on duty in his office, in the Pentagon building at Washington. Colonel Payne had not previously complained of being ill, according to his wife, the former Catherine Edgerton, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. E. Otis Edgerton. A native of Natchitoches, where his father was the late Sheriff Payne, he had been in the Air Corps service for 21 years, having seen duty in World War I and World War II. He was graduated from Kelly Field in the same class with Colonel Charles A. Lindberg. He later left the Air Corps to live in Tallulah for three years where he was engaged in the cotton dusting business. He served in the South Pacific during World War II. He was a graduate of Northwestern State College, La., and of Natchitoches High School, also a Mason and a Shriner. Survivors are: his wife, one son, John William Payne, a student at George Washington University, and two brothers, William and Ed, both of Natchitoches. La. From Tallulah Madison Journal November 3, 1950 Lt. Col. John F. Payne Dies Suddenly; Funeral Services to Be Held Today Lt. Col. John Fitzpatrick Payne, died suddenly at his office in the Pentagon Building, Washington, D. C., early Monday morning. He was 48 years of age. His body was sent overland Tuesday night by rail from Washington, D. C., and arrived in Tallulah Thursday morning. Col. Payne was born and raised in Natchitoches, La., where he attended high school, and graduated from La. Normal, now Northwestern State College. He was a veteran of both World Wars, having served with the U.S. Air Force in World War II. He was graduated from Kelly Field, Texas, in the same class with Colonel Charles A. Lindbergh. In 1927 he married Miss Catherine Edgerton, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. E. O. Edgerton of Tallulah. They resided here for 3 years, during which time Col. Payne was engaged in the crop dusting business. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge. Funeral will be at the Tallulah Methodist Church, with the Rev. John F. Kilpatrick officiating. Interment will follow in the Silver Cross Cemetery under the direction of Young's Funeral Home. Pallbearers will be Harry Harelson, Raymond Brezeal, George Kimbrough, George Yerger, R. N. Ware, Jr., R. G. Long. Honorary pall bearers are R. L. Bailey, Jr., George W. Webb, J. E. Neill, George Eggleston, Isadore Rosenzweig, R. C. Gaines, G. L. Smith, D. H. Allen, Edwin Regenold, R. B. Coad, Dr. Edley H. Jones, B. S. Sweet, Jeff B. Snyder, Slim Thomas, Dr. A. T. Palmer, M. A. Wroten, A. L. Sevier, H. C. Sevier, C. E. Hester, Frank Thomas, H. S. Weaver, Dr. W. H. Parsons, and all the doctors of the old Vicksburg Hospital, and friends of Natchitoches, too numerous to mention. Besides his wife, he is survived by one son, William Payne, a student at George Washington University and two brothers, William and Ed, both of Natchitoches. La.
