He was 95 years old. Joe was born in Tallulah, Louisiana at the Scurria family home on October 25, 1922. He was the ninth of ten children born to Sam and Maria Scurria. Joe was very proud of his Italian heritage and dearly loved his mother, father and siblings. He was a 1939 graduate of Tallulah High School and received his Bachelor of Science degree from Louisiana State University in 1947. Joe was an Army veteran of World War II where he served in the Battery “A” 17th Field Artillery medical division. Some of his greatest pleasures included golf, eating Mom’s Italian food and sleeping until noon, but after dark his big blue eyes lit up shuffling a deck of cards; however, Joe’s joy and proudest accomplishment was providing for his family. He leaves to cherish his memory his devoted wife of 60 years, sweet Sue and his three children Maria O’Dowd (Tim) of Lake Charles , Louisiana; GiGi Ball (Ken) of Colleyville, Texas; and Larry Scurria (Jamie) of Dallas ,Texas; eight grandchildren Molly, John Patrick and Maggie O’Dowd and Army PVT Thomas O’Dowd of the 173rd Airborne Infantry Brigade of Vicenza, Italy. Pallbearers were Tim O’Dowd, John Patrick O’Dowd, Charles Michael Finlayson, Craig Cox, Chad Ezell, and John Rogan. Honorary pallbearers were Ken Ball and Thomas O’Dowd The family wishes to express their appreciation to Dr. LP Neumann and the Olive Branch family for their devotion and loving care. But most of all Maria, GiGi and Larry want to thank Bobbe and Gene Cox. Without their unconditional love, support and selfless giving, Dad would not have been able to stay in his home for as long as he did. Memorials may be made to Saint Edward Catholic Church.
