John Vertner Sevier - Madison Parish, Louisiana

JOHN V. SEVIER BURIED
TALLULAH, La. Oct. 17. John Vertner Sevier, age 60, a resident of Madison Parish for many 
years died at his home here Saturday night at ten o'clock after a long illness. He is 
survived by his widow, Mrs. Alice Peterkin Sevier, three daughters, Mrs. Mason Spencer and 
Miss Vertner Sevier, of Tallulah and Mrs. Charles A. Dixon of Chestnut Hills, Pa., and a 
son John V. Sevier of Tallulah. Two brothers, W. P. Sevier of Tallulah and J. D. Sevier of 
Gulfport, Miss. and two sisters, Mrs. Ophelia S. Nicols of Tallulah and Mrs. Laura S. 
Herring of Innis also survive.

The funeral took place from the family home Sunday afternoon, the Rev. David E. Holt, 
rector of Trinity Episcopal Church here officiated. Internment followed in Silver Cross 
Cemetery.

VERT SEVIER, R.T. STARRETT PASS AWAY THIS WEEK
Both Old Residents of Tallulah, Had Been Ill Some Time

Tallulah this week lost two of its oldest residents when Mr. J. V. Sevier and Mr. R. T. Starrett 
passed away. Both men were near the same age, Mr. Sevier being 69 and Mr. Starrett 67. Mr. Sevier 
died last Saturday night at his home in Tallulah, and Mr. Starrett died at a sanitarium in Vicksburg.

Mr. Sevier Former Planter

Mr. Sevier was at one time one of the larger planters of the parish, and one of several brothers 
who at one time owned extensive lands here. One brother, Geo. W. Sevier, died here several years 
ago and two other brothers still survive him-J. D., who discontinued his farming operations and 
now Lives on the Mississippi gulf coast, and W. P., now a resident of Tallulah, having moved to 
town from his plantation home a couple of years ago. He also has another brother who for many years 
has been in the hotel business at Ferriday, La.

Mr. Sevier was a native of Mississippi, but came to Madison parish early in life and has made his 
home here ever since. He was married twice, the last time to Miss Alice Peterkin who, with one 
daughter Vertner, survives him. He is also survived by two daughters and one son by his first 
marriage, they being Mrs. Mason Spencer of Tallulah, Mrs. C. J. Dixon of Philadelphia, and 
John V. Sevier of Tallulah. Besides the brothers mentioned above, he leaves two sisters, 
Mrs. O. S. Nicols of Tallulah, and Mrs. L. S.  Herring of Innis, La. as well as two grand children, 
George Spencer and Alex Dixon.	

The funeral took place from the home Sunday afternoon with the Rev. David E. Holt, rector of the 
Trinity Episcopal church, officiating, and interment followed in the Silver Cross cemetery with the 
following pall bearers: S. B. Bettis, Mason Spencer, E. F.  Jones, George Webb, Charles  Speed, 
Harry Nicols, Will Holmes, and L. Z. Naylor.

Mr. Sevier was a member of the Masonic lodge.
