Russell Earl Sprague of Anderson, South Carolina, died on March 19, 2005, at the Hospice House in Anderson. He is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Stuart Russell Sprague and Sarah Lee Cellar Sprague of Anderson; a daughter and son-in-law, Susan Sprague and Donald Tietjen of Austin, Texas; a grandson, Drew Stuart Sprague of Anderson; a brother, David Lee Sprague of Prescott Valley, Arizona; and a niece, Kathryn Sprague Novak of Santa Ana, California. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Evelyn Ruth Sprague and Donna Elizabeth Sprague.

Mr. Sprague was widowed twice. His first wife, Julia Margareit Boswell Sprague, died in 1977, and his second wife, Dorothy Cowan Sprague, died in 1995. 

Mr. Sprague was born July 6, 1919, to Earl Van Sprague and Ruth Darrow Kirkham Sprague in Ottumwa, Iowa. He finished high school in Canton, Illinois, and graduated from Knox College in Galesburg, Illinois, in 1940. He was a veteran, having served in World War II with the 5th Infantry in Europe from Normandy through the Battle of the Bulge and the postwar occupation in Czechoslovakia. His career included service with the War Assets Administration and long time service with several bottlers of Coca-Cola. 

He finished his career as a disability examiner with the State of Texas and retired in Austin, Texas. After retirement, he lived in the Wmberley and Austin areas for 15 years. He moved to Anderson, South Carolina, in 1999. Mr. Sprague was a long-time member of the Episcopal Church. He was active in laymen's work and served on advisory committees and as a Trustee at the University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee. He attended St. Stephens in Wimberley, St. Matthews in Austin and St. George s in Anderson as well as Trinity in Tallulah, LA. 

During his retirement his interests included travel, reading, and the arts. While a resident of Anderson he was a frequent patron of the Anderson County Library, local musical and theater presentations, and Anderson College Learning in Retirement. 

The family would like to express appreciation to his many friends and fellow members of St. Stephens, St. Matthews, and St. Georges for the care and support they have given to him during his life. 

There will be a memorial service on Wednesday, March 30, 2005, at 1:30 p.m., at St. Stephens Episcopal Church in Wimberley, Texas. The Rev. Canon C. Don Baugh will be officiating.
