"Jim" Tompkins - Madison Parish, Louisiana From Vicksburg Post February 13, 2008 James E. "Jim" Tompkins died Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2008, at the G.V. "Sonny" Montgomery Veterans Administration Hospital in Jackson. He was 77. Mr. Tompkins was a native of Tallulah and had lived most of his life in Vicksburg. He had been a member of Bowmar Baptist Church from the age of 16. He sang in the choir and, during high school, worked as a janitor for the church. He graduated from Jett High School in 1950 and immediately was drafted in the Army. He served two years in Fairbanks, Alaska, during the Korean War. After returning home, he worked for Westinghouse Electric Co. for a short time, then went to Jackson and worked for the IRS until he transferred to Waterways Experiment Station where he worked until he retired after approximately 30 years. Mr. Tompkins was also a member of the Hovious-Grayson American Legion Post No. 112. He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry James and Lois Fife Tompkins; a sister, Eleanor Tompkins Tingle; a brother, Henry Cecil Tompkins; and a brother-in-law, Leon Tingle. Survivors include one sister and brother-in-law, Jeanette Carlisle and William Carlton Carlisle of Vicksburg; a sister-in-law, Sybil Cook Tompkins of Vicksburg; and nieces and nephews. Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Glenwood Funeral Home with the Rev. Gene Steen officiating. Burial will follow at Green Acres Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 5 until 7 tonight at the funeral home. Pallbearers will be Wendell Moore, Mike Trcka, Rick Redditt, Bill Mullins, Lewis Tingle and J.C. Gullett.
