Ward Tuesday Native And Prominent Citizen Passes Away Early Tuesday At Her Home Mrs. Mary Kate Ward, prominent citizen of Madison Parish passed away in the Vicksburg Infirmary early Tuesday morning after an illness of several months. She was born Mary Kate Sevier, August 29, 1878 at the family home at "Old Milliken's Bend". It was during the yellow fever epidemic here and Milliken's Bend was the largest community in the parish. She spent several years of her childhood with relatives at Port Gibson, Miss., after the death of her mother. She attended Louisiana State Normal, now Northwestern, Natchitoches, La., and in 1900 married Mr. Warren J. Ward in Vicksburg, Miss. He was a prominent planter and businessman in Tensas Parish and Natchez, Miss., but before Mr. Ward's death the family had moved back to Tallulah, purchasing the home they now have on East Green Street. She was a member of the Protestant Episcopal Church, and has been active in the work of Trinity Auxiliary until her illness. Mrs. Ward was a charter member of the Tallulah Book Club and at their banquet last November was most graciously introduced as the only charter member now belonging to the club. Mrs. Ward loved her community and the people in it and gave of herself for the betterment of its welfare. Her ready humor and gay laugh stayed with her always. She wrote many beautiful poems during her lifetime, and always had a talent for expression. She is survived by three daughters, Miss Catherine Ward of Tallulah, Mrs. Hollis Metcalf of Shreveport, and Mrs. Walter Stewart of Beaumont, Texas; and one son, W. H. Ward of Rapid City, South Dakota. Her sister, Mrs. J. S. Agee, survives her. The late Mr. Andrew J. Sevier, sheriff of Madison Parish for a decade was her only brother. Her three other sisters, Mrs. C. S. Utz, Mrs. Carter Williamson and Mrs. Jennie Vertna Young of Vicksburg, Miss., preceded her in death. Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at 3 p. m. in Trinity Episcopal Church with Rev. William S. Spilman officiating. Graveside services were held at the Silver Cross Cemetery. Youngs Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Pallbearers were Harry Holt, Don Sevier, Cliff Adams, R. R. Spigener, C. A. Sparling, C. E. Hester, H. C. Sevier, Jr., Francis Ward and Elbert Ferguson. Members of the Madison Parish Police Jury were honorary pallbearers.
