Ward, one of the leading citizens of Madison parish. La. died in a local hospital Sunday after an illness of several weeks. He was born in Marvel. Ark. on Sept. 14, 1862 and had resided in Madison parish for 43 years, having been engaged in planting and for several years in the hardware business. He was a member of the Baptist church and a Mason. For the past 12 years he had served as chairman of the Democratic executive committee and at one time was a member of the levee board. Mr. Ward is survived by his daughter, Mrs. N. T. Holt and four grandchildren of Tallulah, two sisters, Mrs. G. W. Spence of Clarksdale, Miss., and Mrs. R. B. Macon of Memphis, and one brother, Louis Ward, of Marvel, Ark. From Madison Journal November 8, 1935 MADISON LOSES LONG RESIDENT, W. H. WARD DIES Passes Away In Vicksburg Hospital Sunday After Short Illness W. H. Ward, one of the oldest citizens of Madison parish, died Sunday in a Vicksburg hospital where he had been taken for treatment a short time before when he was suddenly stricken. Mr. Ward attended a meeting of the Parish Democratic Executive Committee, of which he was chairman, on October 8 and was taken ill a few days after. He resided at the home of his daughter, Mrs. N. T. Holt, and was taken to Vicksburg for treatment and never recovered. Mr. Ward was born at Marvel, Ark., on September 14, 1862 and had resided in Madison parish for 43 years having been engaged in planting, and, for several years, the hardware business. At one time he was manager for the Ashley Company, and at that time their operations were enormous. It is said that very few acres of their huge holdings in this parish were not in cultivation. Later he owned and operated the Mansford Plantation. He has served as chairman of the Democratic Executive Committee for several years, at one time was a member of the Levee Board. He was a member of the Baptist Church and the Masonic Lodge. Mr. Ward is survived by his daughter, Mrs. N. T. Holt, and four grandchildren of Tallulah; two sisters, Mrs. G. W. Spence of Clarksdale, Miss., and Mrs. R. B. Macon of Memphis, Tenn., and one brother, Louis Ward of Marvel, Arkansas. Funeral services were held from the family home in Tallulah Monday afternoon at four o'clock with the Rev. L. A. Materne of the Baptist Church officiating. He was assisted by Rev. Skardon D'Aubert, rector of Trinity Episcopal Church. Interment was in the Silver Cross Cemetery, Tallulah. Active pall bearers were A. J. Sevier, J. N. Harvey, J. S. Agee, W. M. Scott, R. S. Cagle and P. O. Benjamin. Honorary, J. H. Gilfoil, Jr., E. B. Saunders, Dr. G. W. Gaines, George S. Yerger, C. E. Speed, W. D. Ziegler and G. M. Hurd.
