Mary Ida Wells - Madison Parish, Louisiana

From Las Vegas Review-Journal May 1, 2014

Mary Ida Wells, of Las Vegas, was born Nov. 29, 1941, and passed away April 23, 2014. Our mama was born Mary Ida Jones to the late Elzee Miller and late Ethel Jones Nov. 29, 1941. The fifth born of 12 children, she attended Madison Parish Elementary Training School, and then on to Ruben McCall Junior High School.

She became a Junior Eastern Star at the age of 10. She met and married our daddy, the late Freddie Lee Wells, in 1958, and to this union nine children were born. Fredrick, the third born, preceded her in death. She and daddy moved to Las Vegas in 1960. She worked for various hotels until she went to work for Clark County School District, driving the school bus. She was a faithful employee and retired after 27 years of service in 2001.

She confessed and gave her life to Christ in 1953 at Traveler's Rest Baptist Church in Tallulah, La., under the leadership of Rev. Matthews. She later joined True Word Interdenominational Church in 2000, under the leadership of founder and then pastor, Bishop Robert Arnold. She was declared the mother of the church by then-Pastor Arnold in 2001. Mary Wells Day was declared Nov. 25, 2012, with a proclamation presented to her by the City of Las Vegas in an award ceremony at True Word ID Church.

She leaves to cherish the wonderful memories, five sons, Leonardo (Susie) Wells, Freddie (Tonya) Wells, Stacey Wells, Yul (Sonya) Wells and Brady (Tonya) Wells, all of Las Vegas; three daughters, Valerie (Samuel) Yates and Pamela Wells of Las Vegas, and Monie (Terry Sr.) Johnson of Fairfield, Calif.; a special friend, John Dixon of Las Vegas; 23 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; Leviticus Temple #1370 family members; and a host of relatives and friends.

Viewing will noon-6 p.m. Friday, May 2, at Ebenezer Church of God in Christ, 1072 W. Bartlett Ave., Las Vegas, NV 89106. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 3, at Second Baptist Church, 500 Madison Ave., Las Vegas, NV 89106. Burial will follow services at Woodlawn Cemetery, 1500 Las Vegas Blvd. N., Las Vegas, NV 89101."Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was; and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it" Ecclesiastes 12:7.
