All rights reserved. ************************************************************************************************** Wesley Thomas Whitfield - Madison Parish, Louisiana From Tallulah Madison Journal September 14, 1945 Wesley Whitfield Killed In Crash Of Transport Plane D. A. Whitfield, formerly of Madison Parish, but now residing at Delhi, was notified recently by the government of the death of his son, Lt. Wesley Thomas Whitfield, 24. a U. S. Navy transport pilot who crashed on an Eastern Airline transport plane near Floyd, S. C., early Friday morning. Lt. Whitfield had been in service for five years. In July, 1940, he volunteered his service to the Royal Air Force and went overseas to fight the Germans. In October, 1942 he transferred to the U. S. naval air corps and still later was transferred to ferry command. In this he did his duty until VE Day. Of 16 who volunteered in this group there is now but one who survives. Lt. Whitfield was born in Monroe, but later his family moved to Madison parish, and he attended school in Tallulah where he was well known. His father was for several years manager of the Mansford plantation. He leaves his wife, a native of Scotland, who is now living in Brooklyn, his father, D. A. Whitfield, Sr., and the following brothers: Lt. Col. J. M. Whitfield, USA, and Davis A. Whitfield, Jr., USN. The remains were brought to Monroe Thursday morning over the Illinois Central railroad from near Florence, S. C., where the plane crash occurred. The funeral was held Thursday afternoon at 4:30 o'clock with military honors. Interment was in the Monroe City Cemetery. The Rev. H. N. Alexander, Presbyterian minister of Opelousas, but formerly of Tallulah officiated.
