Whittington - Madison Parish, Louisiana From Tallulah Madison Journal, August 28, 1980 Services for Charles S. Whittington were held Saturday in the First Baptist Church in Greenwood with Rev. Curtis Burge and Xxxxn Cooper officiating. Burial was in Odd Fellows Cemetery under the direction of d Knight Funeral Home. For many years, Mr. Whittington was a planter and cattleman in Leflore and Carroll Counties in Mississippi. He graduated from what is now known as Mississippi State University in 1917, and was selected its Alumnus of the Year. He helped establish the Mississipi University Development Foundation, Inc., and was one of the most generous donors. After his graduation in 1917, he came to Tallulah at the U.S. Entomology Laboratory where he met and married his wife, the former Mattie Blair. Mr. Whittington had served as director of Mississippi Chemical Corporation, Yazoo City, Coastal Chemical Corporation, Yazoo Valley Oil Mill, Xxxxx Supply Cooperative of Greenwood, Cooperative Elevator Hardwood and the Mississippi XxxxxAssociation. The many honors he received during his lifetime including Leflore County's Outstanding Citizen; Progressive Farmer's Master Farmer Award; Mississippi Cattlemen's Association award for outstanding service to the cattle industry; achievement award for Mississippi's Outstanding Stockman from the MSU Block and Bridle Club; Swift and Company's Founder Centennial Award; New Orleans Bank of Cooperatives Distinguished Service Award. Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Mattie Blair Whittington; a daughter, Mrs. John E. Hughes Jr. of Greenwood; three grandchildren, John E. Hughes III of Jackson, Linda Blair Hughes and Charles Whittington Hughes, Greenwood; four great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Pallbearers were Buck Powers, Ed Bledsoe, Wayne Bush, David Hicks, Jack Johnson, Earl Rowland, Harold Coleman, Leo Murphree, Edward Williams and Carroll Sutton. Honorary pallbearers were residents of Spring Lake Ranch; members of the executive committee of Yazoo Valley-Minter City Oil Mill, Farmers' Supply Cooperative and Mississippi Chemical Co.; W.B. Donald, Francis Stallworth, Dr. James McComas, Dr. W.L. Giles, Arthur Davis, Gene Heidelberg and Dr. Fred Sandifer.
