Yerger, Sr. - Madison Parish, Louisiana From Tallulah Madison Journal June 29, 1945 George S. Yerger, Sr. Well-known Planter Buried Wednesday Funeral services for George S. Yerger, Sr., 76 year old planter of Madison Parish who died in a Vicksburg hospital Monday were held at the family residence at Mound Wednesday afternoon at 3:30. The Rev. Dean Maurer, rector of the Episcopal Church officiated. Interment was held in Cedar Hill Cemetery in Vicksburg. Mr. Yerger at the time of his death was a member of the Fifth District Louisiana Levee Board and was past president of that board. He was a director of the Pan American Life Insurance Company a director of the Tallulah State bank, owner of the Tallulah Oil mill and gin and owner of extensive farming interests throughout the parish. He took a prominent part in the business and civic interests of the parish and was a member of one of the best known families of this section. He was born May 17, 1869 in Jackson, Miss., the son of George Shall Yerger and Elizabeth Sizer Yerger. At the age of 18, he went to Young's Point, Madison parish, where he became associated in business with Colonel F. L. Maxwell. For a few years he was a travelling representative for Lee Richardson and Company. He served as captain and adjutant with the First Mississippi regiment in the Spanish-American war. In March, 1900, Mr. Yerger married Miss Edna Maxwell. They had six sons, all of whom survive. They are Maxwell, George S. Jr., Andrew L., Edward M., and William, all of Madison parish, and Sergeant Rufus Taft Yerger of the United States Army. Active pallbearers for the service were J. E. Neill, Henry C. Sevier, W. P. Sevier, H. W. Burleigh, A. N. Duke, J. W. Davis, J. P. Arbuthnot and E. C. Woodyear.
