"Lil Sister" Anderson departed this life on Sunday, October 23, 2016 at the age of 86, Wife of the late Arthur Anderson, Mother and mother in law of Jimmy (Terry) Anderson, Glenda (Earl Jr) Clark, Melvin (Conswader) Picou, Margie Robertson, Brenda (Calvin) Lumar, Barbara (Carl Sr) Johnson, Lori(Solomon) Joseph, Lesa Anderson, and Charles Riley Sr (husband of the late Joyce Anderson Riley)also survived by a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren other relatives and friends. Constance (Mumphrey) Arrington

Constance Mumphrey Arrington, a homemaker, died April 1 at Memorial Medical Center. She was 83. Mrs. Arrington was born in Lemannville and lived in New Orleans for the past 60 years. She was a member of Jerusalem Missionary Baptist Church, where she was a member of the deaconess board, the Sunday school and the Willing Workers Club. Survivors include two sons, Phillip Arrington Jr. of Los Angeles and John Arrington; a daughter, Jacqueline A. Franklin; two brothers, Edmond Mumphrey of Richmond, Calif., and the Rev. John Mumphrey of Cleveland; a sister, Odeal M. Sullivan; 21 grandchildren; and 32 great-grandchildren. Pauliska Fobb Bazile, a retired seamstress, died Saturday at Thibodeaux Regional Medical Center. She was 89. Mrs. Bazile was a lifelong resident of St. James. She was a member of St. Luke Baptist Church. Survivors include six sons, Herbert, Curtis, Charles, Stanley, Clarence and Sheldon Bazile; two daughters, Gennevie Treaudo and Ida Jasmin; 43 grandchildren; 83 great-grandchildren; and 24 great-great-grandchildren. Brownsyn J. Braud, M.D.

On April 9, 2016, Dr. Braud passed away at City of Hope Hospital in California. She was born in Washington, D.C. on January 31, 1948. Several months later she came to Welcome, LA where she lived for several years and entered elementary school. Later, she enrolled at St. Mary's Academy in New Orleans. Then, when the Bourbon Street school closed, she attended Holy Rosary Institute in Lafayette, LA where she graduated from high school. At that time, Brownsyn was interested in being a "nun" and enrolled at Immaculate College in Bryn Mar, Pennsylvania. She was there for a year and then transferred to Xavier University in New Orleans, LA. Following graduation from Xavier University, she enrolled at Meharry Medical College in Nashville, TN. In 1976 she graduated from Meharry Medical College and interned at Martin Luther King Hospital in Watts, CA. She completed her Pediatrics in 1979. In 1981 Brownsyn completed her sub-specialty of Adolescent Medicine at Children's Hospital of Los Angeles, CA. Following her residency, Brownsyn began working at the University of Southern California, later transitioning to Loyola Marymount University. Eventually, she began working at California State University at Long Beach in their Student Health Center where she worked for 25 years until retirement in February 2015. Brownsyn also worked part time at Kaiser Permanente Hospital in Loma Linda, CA until 2015. She leaves to cherish her memories, a daughter, Anya R. Hancock, M.D., her father, Joseph P. Braud, M.D., three sisters, Brenda Braud Balthazar Medina, Shannon Braud Payseur, M.D., Falon L. Braud, and one brother, Joseph P. Braud, Jr. DDS. She also had several lifelong friends and a host of family members. A mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. James Catholic Church, 6611 Highway 18, St. James, LA 70086. Entombment will follow at Buena Vista Cemetery (Lemonville, LA). Treasures of Life Center for Life Funeral Services are entrusted with the arrangements of her final care. Amelia Marie "Cookie" Davis departed this life Peacefully on Saturday, May 16, 2020. Cookie was born on March 16, 1954 in St. James, LA to the late Thomas and Loubirdia Joshua Davis. Cookie was baptized at Buena Vista Baptist Church. Cookie graduated from St. James High School in 1973. She worked at J. C. Penny's, Anita's Grill, P. L. Dunbar Elem, J. W. Johnson Elem, and S. T. Reed Elem and as a housekeeper for several families. Cookie was a faithful member of First Shiloh M. B. C., the Gospel Soul Children of New Orleans, Buena Vista Willing Workers and the Louisiana Freedmen Missionary Association. Melvin Davis, Sr. 65 years old, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, July 4, 2019 at Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center of Baton Rouge, LA while surrounded by his family. He was born on June 10, 1954 in Donaldsonville, LA. The son of Marie and Leon Davis, Sr., Melvin was the sixth child of eight siblings. He was reared in a Christian home, of the Catholic faith. In 1987 he was baptized at Buena Vista Baptist Church by Rev. Dr. Joseph Coleman, Sr. He served on the Deacon Board until his death. He graduated from Donaldsonville High School in 1973. He worked as a plant operator at Agrico Faustina Chemical Plant in St. James, LA for 20 plus years, until his retirement. Samuel Joseph Jr., a retired laborer with the New Orleans Sewerage & Water Board, died July 11 of heart failure at Earl K. Long Hospital. He was 58. Mr. Joseph was born in Garyville and lived in Kenner for the past 38 years. He was a graduate of Booker T. Washington High School. He was a former employee of Pepsi-Cola. He was a member of New Hope Community Baptist Church. Survivors include two sons, Herman and Robert Joseph; six brothers, Jimmy Douglas Jr. of Kenner and Sydney, Samuel III, Spencer, Mitchell and Michael Joseph, all of Houston; three sisters, Wanda Davis and Hilda Brockett, both of Houston, and Melva Brousseaux of San Diego; and three grandchildren. Namon Joshua III

Namon Joshua III, "Butch" 64 years old, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday April 28, 2018 at Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus, OH while surrounded by family. He was born January 12, 1954 in St. James, Louisiana. The son of Beatrice and Namon Joshua Jr., Namon was the eldest of 6 siblings. He graduated Cum laude from Southern University, Baton Rouge, LA. He was then recruited to Mellon Bank in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and was later promoted to AVP where he was a field manager. He later met his soon to be wife and married Phyllis Joshua on August 18, 1979. They had two children, Candace Peterson and Namon Joshua IV. He later took a position with Bank One in Columbus, Ohio. Namon was an AVP as a systems analyst. In 1995 he was an entrepreneur with Legal Shield where he later became an executive director and built a successful business. Namon loved to cook, won several rib fests, and called himself "Dr. Sauce". He served at Buena Vista Baptist Vista Baptist Church as a deacon until moving to Pittsburgh, PA. He served on the Deacon Board at Ebenezer Baptist Church in Pittsburgh, PA. He was a member of New Salem Missionary Baptist Church, Columbus, OH. Visiting at Buena Vista Baptist Church, St. James, religious services, conducted by Rev. Dr. Joseph Coleman, Sr., Pastor. Interment in the church cemetery. Rev. Vernon S. Joshua

The Rev. Vernon S. Joshua, pastor of New St. Mark Missionary Baptist Church and Second St. John Missionary Baptist Church, died Monday of a heart attack at Touro Infirmary. He was 66. The Rev. Joshua was born in Lemannville and lived in New Orleans for the past 46 years. He was a graduate of Lowery High School, Delgado Community College and Loyola University. He was a retired machine technician at Lockheed Martin and a former pastor at Third Shilo Baptist Church. He was a member of the Louisiana Freedman Missionary Baptist General Association, second vice president of the Westside Missionary Baptist Association, founder and president of the Vernon S. Joshua Westside Supervisors and Youth Conference, and an honorary member of the Cornerstone Baptist Association. Survivors include his wife, Helen S. Joshua; a son, Van Anthony Joshua; a daughter, Lisa Tranette Joshua-Lee; four brothers, Earl, Ulion, David and the Rev. Sidney Joshua; two sisters, Eula Murray and Annie Landry; and two grandchildren. Visitation and a wake was held Friday. A funeral will be held today at 10 a.m. at Second St. John Missionary Baptist Church. Dismissal will be at 1:30 p.m. at Buena Vista Baptist Church in Lemannville. Elserie Mitchell on Tuesday, July 30, 2013 at approximately 3:30 at Baton Rouge General Hospital, the angels of mercy summoned home one of His faithful servants, Elserie Mitchell, to His home of eternal rest. Elserie was born on Feb. 7, 1968 to Wilson and Ora Mitchell. She was the mother of four loving children, Courtland Leon Mitchell, Kayla Renee' and Kierra Monique Oubre, and Kiristen Charise D. McGirt, and the loving fiancee of Charles McGirt. She had two godchildren, Whittney Madison and Terek Carter. She was baptized at Buena Vista Baptist Church by Rev. Joseph Coleman. She worked as a security guard, self-employed beautician, and she loved to cook. She leaves to cherish her precious memory her father, Wilson Mitchell; three daughters, Kayla and Kierra Oubre and Kiristen McGirt; her fiance, Charles McGirt; six sisters, Dorothy Adams, Doris and Margidine Mitchell, and Carol Muggs of St. James, La., Shelia Madison (Tyrone) of Donaldsonville, La., and Ora Blake (Barret) of Austin, Texas; and one brother, Alfred Mitchell, Sr. (Althea) of Houston, Texas. Theresa Isabelle (Brown) Mumphrey

Theresa Isabelle Brown Mumphrey was called to glory to be with the Lord on Tuesday, March 5, 2019. She was born on December 4, 1929 to the late Willis Brown, Sr. and the late Alma Brown in Donaldsonville, Louisiana. She accepted Christ at an early age and was baptize by the late Rev. W. M. Smith at the Mt Salem Baptist Church in Donaldsonville, Louisiana. She relocated to New Orleans, Louisiana and became a member of Jerusalem Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Reverend Oris Marshall, Sr. where she remained a member under the now leadership of the Reverend Aldon E. Cotton. As a member of Jerusalem Missionary Baptist Church, she played the piano for the Sunday School and she sang in the choir. She was a servant anywhere she could be of service to the Lord along with her husband. In her latter years, she became one of the Mothers of the Church. She was educated in the Ascension Parish school system in Donaldsonville, Louisiana. She graduated from McDonald 35 in New Orleans, Louisiana in 1949. She continued her studies at the Coinson School of Practical Nursing where she completed her studies with a certification as a Practical Nurse in 1952. She met the answer to her every prayer when she hoped for a sweetheart to care for and share her love with. She met Joseph Mumphrey. She was married to the Rev. Joseph Mumphrey, Sr. on June 27, 1953. To this union five children were born; Joseph Jr., Jasper, Avis, Angel and Genesis. Theresa was momma to everybody. She loved family and family gatherings. She was affectionately called "Auntie" by her nieces and nephews. She made all of her nieces and nephews feel special. She would gather all of them in her car and bring them to New Orleans for vacations. She wasn't only affectionate to her family and neighbors, she had the same affection for animals. She loved to bring home stray dogs and cats. In her neighborhood she was very helpful and generous to all who needed her. There was nothing to small that she wouldn't do for others. Theresa was determined not to be a burden; she proved that she was an independent person even with her disability. Even after the devastation of Hurricane Katrina, there was no stopping her from rebuilding her home in the Lower Ninth Ward. By the Grace of God, she was able to accomplish the rebuild and lived in her independence as she wanted. Theresa leaves to cherish her memories, her loving children: Joseph Jr. (Linda), Jasper (Chrystal), Avis (Eddie), Angel (Addison) and Genesis. A daughter-in-law, Cinderella Cayette. Her granddaughters, Genitra, Nicole, Chanitra, Edwina and Keyaria. Her grandsons, Harold, Kendall, Terry, Calvin, Cardell and Albert. Also to cherish her memories are eleven great-grandsons and five great-granddaughters. Also to cherish her memories are her two sisters; Clara Bell, and Rose Brown and her two brothers, Lawrence Brown, Sr. (Sallie) and Nathaniel Brown. Her four sisters-in-law; Odeal Sullivan, Emma Mumphrey, Billie Mumphrey and Genevieve Brown; to also cherish her memories. There are also some special people who were in her life that will cherish her memories, Joyce Brown, Betty Lee, Brian Washington, Ariana Lee and Dawn Mumphrey. She will be missed by her nieces and nephews and her friend Mabel Howard. She will also be missed by all who called her momma and considered her their mother. She was truly loved and will be missed by all her family, other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Mumphrey, Sr., her parents Willis and Alma Brown, one son Harold Cayette Sr., one granddaughter Elizabeth Kelly, her four brothers; Ullyesis, Norbert, Harold and Wills, Jr Brown.; Four sisters-in-law, Constance Arrington, Ella Brown, Molly Brown, Luberta Brown, Rosemary Mumphrey and Anita Brown; five brothers-in-law; Isiah, John and Edmond Mumphrey; Phillip Arrington and Henry Bell. On Wednesday, March 18, 2020 in the Intensive Care Unit of the Baton Rouge General Medical Center, Girdie Robinson Pedescleaux transitioned from this life into eternal rest. Girdie was born on August 17, 1952 to the union of the late Henry Robinson and Odessa Lee Robinson in Donaldsonville, Louisiana. She was 67 years old and a resident of Lemanville, Louisiana. Girdie was baptized at an early age at the Buena Vista Baptist Church by the late Reverend Henry Tribbet, Sr. She served diligently in the ministry as a devoted choir member and a deaconess. She was educated in the Ascension Parish Schools having graduate from Donaldsonville High School in 1970. Upon receiving her credentials from Westside Vocational Technical School, Girdie became a Licensed Practical Nurse and worked in her vocation for many years and she remained faithful to her craft until her health began to decline. Her favorite job though, above all, was spoiling her daughter, Geralyn R. Smith. This job she would do until her untimely demise. Girdie was patient, kind, and a great listener to her family and friends whenever they needed to chat it up. Her heart was always open to those who were in need and she gave of herself anyway she could. Girdie was united in holy matrimony to Charles Pedescleaux, Jr., and in 1997 they began their journey that would last for the past (22) years. They shared one daughter, Geralyn R. Smith. Girdie leaves to mourn her passing, but cherish the precious memories left behind, her husband of (22) years; Charles Pedescleaux, Jr., One daughter and son-in-law; Geralyn R. Elizabeth Arceneaux Spotville entered eternal rest on Thursday, June 22, 2023. Elizabeth was born on December 23, 1939, in McCall, Louisiana, St. James Parish to parents David Arceneaux and Pearl Ruffin Arceneaux. She was the eldest of four children. She is preceded in death by brothers: Edward James Ruffin (Barbara) and Samuel Houston Jones (Nora). Leaving to mourn is her sister, Bernice Johnson (Curtis). Elizabeth was joined in matrimony in 1959 to the late Wilbert Charles Spotville until his death. Elizabeth and Wilbert Charles had three children in their union: Kenneth Charles (Lea), Anthony Glenn, and Elizabeth Marie (Brian). Thereafter, Elizabeth had three more children: Steven Ray Arceneaux (Kim), Rodney Deon Arceneaux (Kitty), and Desiree Monique Arceneaux Lemons (Randy). She was the proud grandparent to 20 grandchildren, a host of great grandchildren, and great, great-grandchildren. Elizabeth was a great cook and loved sharing her food with others. Whether Elizabeth was watching her morning stories on TV, cooking up a good meal, or reading her Bible, she was happiest when she was spending time with her family. Interment in Buena Vista Baptist Church Cemetery, St. James, LA. He is survived by 4 daughters; Iris Marshall, Jasmine Henderson, Deborah Jordan and Sharon Brown, 5 sons; Ulysses Wire, Jr., Irving Wire, Lynn Wire, Van Wire and Darrell Wire, 3 sisters; Olevia Joshua, Ruth Veal and Rosemary Sorrell, numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his wife Shirley Wire, parents; Mary and Harrison Wire, 4 brothers, 4 sisters, 1 sister-in-law and 4 brothers-in-law. Ulysse Wire, Sr. was a sergeant in the 3416th Quarter Master Truck Company; He served in Central Europe and Western Germany in World War II. He was awarded The European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with Three Tours, American Theater Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, and Victory Medal. He served in the US Army from June 1, 1943 - February 13, 1946.

Dorothy Mae Wyre

Dorothy Mae Wyre, 84, a native of Lemonville and resident of Raceland, died on Wednesday, Dec. 12, 2012. Funeral services will be at New Harvest Church in Thibodaux, with burial in Buena Vista Baptist Church Cemetery in St. James. She is survived by four sisters, Delores Hall, Joyce Wyre Nelson, Lorraine Wyre and Willis Mae Wyre; two brothers, the Rev. Leo Wyre and Cleo Wyre; and two grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, Willis Wyre Sr. and Geneva Wyre Williams; a son, Ronald Wyre; a brother, the Rev. Willis Wyre Jr. and a sister, Yvonne Wyre Mimes. She was a member of New Harvest Church. Kennedy Funeral Home in Raceland is in charge of arrangements.
