Man faces life in prison after pleading guilty in estranged wife's bludgeoning death
DONALDSONVILLE, LA (WAFB) - An Ascension Parish man is looking at spending the rest of his life in prison after pleading guilty to killing his estranged wife. The 23rd Judicial District Court reported David Johnson, 40, of Geismar, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder Monday in the beating death of Monica Johnson, 45, in 2015. Officials said the plea was entered the day before jury selection was expected to start in David Johnson's first-degree murder trial. A conviction on second-degree murder in Louisiana carries a mandatory life sentence without the possibility of probation or parole. Judge Thomas Kliebert said David Johnson will be formally sentenced on Sept. 11, 2017. According to court documents, deputies with the Ascension Parish Sheriff's Office responded to reports of a disturbance at a home on Canterbury Park Drive in Geismar on Aug. 9, 2015. Reports stated Monica Johnson was found dead in the back yard of the home. Documents also stated detectives confirmed David Johnson strangled the victim and beat her with a baseball bat. They added the weapon was found in a ditch near the home.

April Lynn (Smith) Mitchell

April was born on October 22, 1971 to the union of Gloria Paul Smith and Edward Smith. She was formerly married to Leo Mitchell Jr. and from this union two children were born; Ariel Mitchell (Charles Jr.) of Gonzales, LA and Leo Mitchell III (Darriyonne) of Vacherie, LA. April was very out spoken but had a heart of gold. She loved giving orders and taking charge of situations. Boiling crabs and making gumbo was her specialty. Every week she would boil and eat crabs. She was a Facebook Queen. Most of all she loved her two children, Ariel and Leo III. She also loved and adored Z'Kaden Jasmin, better known as Muff. She would say Muff was her daughter. Nothing was too much for her to give or do for her, and Muff loved her Maw-Maw April. April would argue with you one minute then call back later and say "I'm not mad, because at the end of the day we're still family. She would laugh and say, "you know I was right" and start a new conversation. She loved her family, always making plans for some sort of family gathering. She once said "People can be so mean sometimes, they only see the outside of me, but I'm so glad GOD sees and knows the inside of me. April will be missed by her nieces and nephews because she loved them as if they were her own and went hard for them, no matter what the circumstance may have been. She also will be sadly missed by best friends Kathleen Green, Angela Landry, Verna Jones, Tameka Landry and Darlene Wade. We won't cry in despair as though she was never there, but in Love and compassion because we do care. APRIL IS NOT GONE-she's in our hearts always.
