Tracy Ann (Roberts) Baker

Tracy Ann Roberts was born to the union of Patricia Meggs and Clinton Roberts, Jr. on August 24, 1964. She was the second of five children. Tracy accepted the Lord as a teenager and was baptized by the late Rev. John Harris on August 21, 1977 in the Mississippi River. For 41 years, she remained a member of Mt. Calvary Baptist Church where she sang in the choir, special activities with the children and the finance department. She was united in marriage to Michael Baker, to this union a beautiful baby girl, by the name of Whittley was born. Tracy attended St. James High School and graduated in May of 1982. She furthered her studies and received her business degree from Louisiana Technical College in Sorrento. After a period of working in the offices of Brown and Root and Entergy New Orleans, she pursued her career at Marathon Petroleum for 13 years. She also took a few cake decorating classes at Michael's. Tracy is survived by her daughter, Whittley B. Baker; father, Clinton Roberts, Jr.; two brothers, Jerome Roberts, Sr. (Angie) and Lynell Roberts, Sr.; two sisters, Leslie R. Felton and Jovania R. Hawthorne; god parents, Neomia M. Young and Wayne Roberts; devoted friends, Rolanda Parquette, Christie Ocmond and Renell Frazier; and a host of aunts, nieces, nephews, cousins and god-children. Tracy was preceded in death by her mother, Patricia Meggs Roberts; maternal grandparents, Francis Plant Meggs and Warren Meggs, Sr.; paternal grandparents, Leanna Young Roberts and Clinton Roberts, Sr.; aunts; uncles and cousins. Milton Batiste of LaPlace, LA entered into eternal rest at the age of 71 on Thursday, May 27, 2021, at Ochsner Medical Center in Kenner, LA. He was preceded in death by his wife, Deborah Batiste; his parents, Newton, and Aldonia Batiste, three siblings, August Batiste, Ethel Smith, and Senobia Allen; his mother and father-in-law, Alma and Austin Dennis, Sr.; four brothers-in-law, Wilfred Armant, Sr., William Smith, Albert Verdin, and James Joseph; one sister-in-law, Laverne Dennis; and two nephews, Rodney Smith, and Troy Allen. Isiah Brown was born on March 12, 1945 to the late Eddie Brown, Sr. and Enola Trench Brown. He departed the earthly life peacefully on Friday, February 14, 2020 at St. Joseph Carpenter House in New Orleans, LA surrounded by his loving family. Isiah was a native of Vacherie, LA and was reared in a Christian home and accepted Christ as Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on February 12, 2020. He was affectionately known as "Cool Brown." He enjoyed being sociable and spending time with his family. He was a welder for various construction companies and retired in 2012. He leaves to cherish three children: Ellery Brown, Tia (Kareem) Octave, and Ebony Brown all of St. James, LA; Six grandchildren: JaQuendas Octave, Tayvon Brown, Keionne Octave, Kyren Brown, Khylon Brown and Rhyleigh Brown; One great-grandson, Taydum Isiah Brown; Four sister: Jessie Mae Brown, Ceedja Hill, Jeanette (George) Gray, Melba (Michael) Oubre; Two brothers: Rev. Andrew "June" Chatman Jr. - A retired employee with PCS Nitrogen of Geismar, he died at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, June 28, 2007, at his home in Baton Rouge. He was 67 and a native of Donaldsonville. Clifton Samuel Joseph

Clifton Samuel "Cockey" Joseph, a native and resident of Convent, Louisiana, departed this life on Friday, December 30, 2022, at approximately 5:29 am at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Gonzales, Louisiana. Clifton, also known as "Paw," to his grandchildren, was born on August 23, 1951, to the late Mary Joseph and Clifton Thomas in New Orleans, La. Clifton accepted Christ as his savior in April of 2005 and was baptized at Mt. Calvary Baptist Church by Rev. Samuel Jones. He attended and graduated from Central High School in Union, La. in 1969. He was married to Nancy Smith on the 1st of January in 1975, by the late Rev. Earnest Landry and to this union, five daughters were born. He served 14 years in the United States Navy and was Honorably Discharged in August 1984. He was formerly employed by Avondale Shipyard and later worked at Zen-Noh Grain Elevator for over a decade until his health began to fail. Clifton was not only devoted to his family but a pillar of the community he grew up in. Many knew him to be an avid fisherman, mechanic, listening to and burning CDs, spending time with his grandchildren, making his own wine, a jack of all trades, and dirtying every dish in the kitchen to prepare a meal for his family. He leaves to mourn and cherish his memory his devoted wife of 48 years, Nancy Smith Joseph; five daughters, Kenya Joseph, Keantrya J. Franklin (Eddie), Kachelsia J. Martin (Calvin), Kyameshia and Kareema Joseph; four grandchildren, Xzavier Jamal, Keyondre' Tyreke, and Tristyn Imani Franklin and Kohen Joseph Marcell. He is also survived by two brothers, Alvin and Aaron Joseph; three brothers-in-law, Joseph Smith, Jr. and Lawrence Smith, Sr., and Dr. Rev. Samuel Jones; four sisters-in-law, Leona Harris, Olivia Smith, Elizabeth Davis, and Loretta Bouie; two Godchildren, Rhonda Jones-Green and Taber Davis, Sr.; three shadows (nephews) Jerome Picou Jr., W'Juankeil Jones, and Jayden Dumas; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. ST. JAMES - Edward Harris, 47, a native of St. James and resident of Gonzales, died Feb. 21. He was the husband of Sylvia Jones Harris and father of Neshawn, Kendell, Claudell and the late Brittany Harris. He was also the son of the late Rosemary Harris Mitt, stepson of Robert Mitt and brother of Debbie Leboeuf, Shelia Clayton, Elizabeth Verrett, Linwood Harris and the late Jacqueline Harris. Daughter of the late Felix and Florence Whittington. Clifton Samuel Joseph

Clifton Samuel "Cockey" Joseph, a native and resident of Convent, Louisiana, departed this life on Friday, December 30, 2022, at approximately 5:29 am at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Gonzales, Louisiana. Clifton, also known as "Paw," to his grandchildren, was born on August 23, 1951, to the late Mary Joseph and Clifton Thomas in New Orleans, La. Clifton accepted Christ as his savior in April of 2005 and was baptized at Mt. Calvary Baptist Church by Rev. Samuel Jones. He attended and graduated from Central High School in Union, La. in 1969. He was married to Nancy Smith on the 1st of January in 1975, by the late Rev. Earnest Landry and to this union, five daughters were born. He served 14 years in the United States Navy and was Honorably Discharged in August 1984. He was formerly employed by Avondale Shipyard and later worked at Zen-Noh Grain Elevator for over a decade until his health began to fail. Clifton was not only devoted to his family but a pillar of the community he grew up in. Many knew him to be an avid fisherman, mechanic, listening to and burning CDs, spending time with his grandchildren, making his own wine, a jack of all trades, and dirtying every dish in the kitchen to prepare a meal for his family. He leaves to mourn and cherish his memory his devoted wife of 48 years, Nancy Smith Joseph; five daughters, Kenya Joseph, Keantrya J. Franklin (Eddie), Kachelsia J. Martin (Calvin), Kyameshia and Kareema Joseph; four grandchildren, Xzavier Jamal, Keyondre' Tyreke, and Tristyn Imani Franklin and Kohen Joseph Marcell. He is also survived by two brothers, Alvin and Aaron Joseph; three brothers-in-law, Joseph Smith, Jr. and Lawrence Smith, Sr., and Dr. Rev. Samuel Jones; four sisters-in-law, Leona Harris, Olivia Smith, Elizabeth Davis, and Loretta Bouie; two Godchildren, Rhonda Jones-Green and Taber Davis, Sr.; three shadows (nephews) Jerome Picou Jr., W'Juankeil Jones, and Jayden Dumas; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. He's preceded in death by his parents, Mary Joseph and Clifton Thomas; and in-laws, Joseph and Mary Smith; one granddaughter, Kollins Marcell; three sisters, Dolores Macklin Jones and Hattie Mae Jones, and Sharon Joseph Moton; nephew (son) Idrick Christopher Joseph. Eloise (Marks) Shelvin

A Home-going celebration for Eloise "Tut" Marks Shelvin, 63, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, September 9, 2017, at Mt. Calvary Baptist Church, 414 Weeks Street, New Iberia. Pastor Mark E. Lewis will officiate the service. Interment will follow in Mt. Calvary Church Cemetery. Visitation will begin on Saturday at the church from 8 a.m. until time of services. Eloise was born on July 12, 1954, in Lafayette to the parents of the late Alfred Marks Sr. and Bertha Jacquet, one of 13 children. She worked as a cook for many years at several places including Lafayette General Hospital. She was married to Michael Paul Shelvin, who preceded her in death. Eloise accepted Christ at a very young age and loved God more than life itself. She was a member of the Mt. Calvary Baptist Church. In addition to her husband and parents, she was also preceded in death by two siblings, Debra Price and Alfred Marks Jr., four nephews and one niece. Eloise peacefully passed away on Thursday, August 31, 2017, in New Iberia following a brief illness. Eloise, affectionately known as "Tut" leaves to cherish fond memories, with her two nieces, Katressa Johnson Levine of Indianapolis and Shi'Quetta St. Julien of New Orleans; 10 siblings Betha Davis of Arlington, Texas, Joshelyn Marks of Atlanta, Beverly (John) Ledet, Michelle (Everette) Manuel, Jacqueline Marks, Karen Ledet and Harold Marks, all of New Iberia, Dr. Kevin (Antoinette) Marks of Katy, Texas and Bryant (Bernetta) Marks and Jerome Marks, both of Lafayette; and a host of nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, other relatives and friends. Cal "Cossa" Smith departed this life on Thursday, Dec. 19, 2019, at his residence in St. James. He was 103, a native of St. James. Florence Whittington Smith entered into eternal rest on Tuesday, August 30, 2016 at the age of 76. She was a native of Welcome, LA and a resident of Avondale, LA. Beloved wife of Herman Smith, Sr. Loving mother of Gail (Gerald) Jones, Leticher (Roosevelt) Randall, Herman (Alisa) Smith, Patricia (Robert) Gordon, and Florence (Roosevelt) Washington. Loving grandmother of Marious, Teaonde, Gerald, Tonika, Alisha, Meagan, Shaun, Robin, Jonathan, Ciara, Rhema, Darius, Datrena, and Roosevelt, Jr. Daughter of the late Felix and Florence Whittington. Sister of Ora Lee Broden, Dora Smith, Oretha (John) Helire, Barbara (Sidney) Jones, Idell (Orlander) Taylor, and Walter (Velma Lee) Whittington. She was preceded in death by 6 brothers and 4 sisters . Daughter-in-law of Emerle Smith. Jean (Ursin) Smith

Jean Ursin Smith, 39, a native of Convent and a resident of St.James, died Jan. 12. She was the wife of Lawrence Smith Sr. and mother of three. She was also the daughter of Margarete Ester Ursin and the late Charles Ursin Sr. and sister of Joann Breaux, Ann Bush, Jackie Howard and Stacy, Robert, Wayne and Charles Ursin Jr. She is also survived by one grandchild. Services were held Jan. 17 at Mt. Calvary Baptist Church, St. James, with interment at the church cemetery.

Ra'Miya Ashanti Sowell, age 15 of St. James, LA passed away unexpectedly on July 19, 2022 at 11:19 pm. She was the daughter of Ashley Jones and the late Randy Sowell. She was the granddaughter of Louise Jones, Anthony Fefie, Sr., Ruby Henyard (Perry), the late Reginald Whittington, and Andrea (Ira) Vaugn. She is survived by her aunts and uncles: Ashinique Jones, Ashton Jones, Roshell Sowell, Hubert Wiggins, Houston Wiggins, Brandon Whittington, Brodnick Whittington, Brinaldi Whittington, Anthony Fefie, Jr. She is also survived by a host of great aunts, great uncles, cousins, and friends. Special mention to her Godparents Sherel Butler Simon, Ron Winchester Sr., the late Labaron Napoleon and the late Consuelo Darby. She was preceded in death by her father; Randy Sowell, her great grandparents; Tofield and Adlene Whittington, Gwendolyn Nelson and Robert Sowell Sr., Albert and Rosemary Jones, and Alonzo and Rita Fifie. Ra'miya missed her father dearly. We find comfort in knowing they are together again and her soul is at peace. We know that she is dancing with her father. Wilfred Washington Sr.

Wilfred Washington Sr., of St. James, turned in his sword for a crown Monday, Nov. 1, 2010. He was the husband of the late Rose W. Washington, son of the late Adlean M. Gay and late Willie Washington, beloved father of Wilfred Jr., Angelious, Tonita and Gilbert Washington, Nellie Bergeron and Debra Young, all of St. James; Cathy Daniels, of Avondale; Stanley Whittington, of Donaldsonville; and Janice Geason, Allen and Ray Charles Washington, all of Vacherie. He is also survived by a devoted niece, Elaine T. Harris, of Chicago; 38 grandchildren, 40 great-grandchildren, two godchildren, a host of sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, sons-in-law and daughters-in-law, nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by three great-grandchildren; a brother, Eugen Taylor Sr.; and a sister, Eva M. Harvey. Tofield "Bo Diddly" Whittington Jr. - A native and resident of St. James, he passed away on Monday, July 28, 2014, and Leonard J. Chabert Medical Center in Houma. He was 59. Visiting at St. James Catholic Church, St. James, on Saturday, Aug. 9, from 9 a.m. until a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m., conducted by the Rev. Christopher Decker. Interment in Mount Calvary Baptist Church Cemetery, St. James. Survived by his mother, Adleen Bobbler Whittington. A sister, Veronica Scieneaux. Two brothers: Melvin and Kenneth Whittington.
