Earl "Bucka" Batiste departed this life on Thursday, February 23, 2017 at Thibodaux Regional Medical Center in Thibodaux, La. He was born on March 24, 1944 to the union of the late Robert, Sr. and Mary Batiste. He leaves to cherish his memories his devoted wife, Valerie Steib Batiste. Jackie Batiste, Sr.

Jackie Batiste, Sr., affectionately known as "Six Pack Jack" and "Big Hand Jack", was born September 15, 1952 to Mary Blain and Joseph Batiste. He later went on to join the local 689 Union as a foreman. After his retirement, he took up a new hobby, "traveling the skies," as he would call it. On March 31, 1973, Jackie was united in holy matrimony to Brenda M. Morris. To their union two children were born, the late Jackie Batiste, Jr. and Sheretta Batiste. Jackie, a natural jokester, loved to cook, travel and had a keen eye for fashion, especially his beloved hats. A loving and caring father and grandfather, who loved his family and was a devoted genuine friend, who's earthly journey ended on March 6, 2021 in Tacoma, WA. He is now taking his final flight to his final resting place. Herbert "Pecan" Bazile departed this life on Sunday, April 21, 2019 at Twin Oaks Nursing Home, LaPlace, LA. He was 91, a former resident of New Orleans until Hurricane Katrina. He then moved to his native town of St. James, LA. A funeral is scheduled for noon Saturday at St. Luke Baptist Church in St. James for Cardell Blain Sr., 38, a native and resident of Vacherie, who died Sunday, Feb. 11, 1996 at Our Lady of the Lake Medical Center in Baton Rouge. Roland Broden Sr.

Wednesday, April 23, 1947 - Sunday, January 30, 2022
"And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain; for the former things are passed away." Revelations 21:4. Bro. Roland "Rookie" Broden Sr. was born to the union of the late Walter and Viola C. Broden on April 23, 1947. On the morning of January 30, 2022, he heard his Master's voice saying, "My good and faithful servant, your work on earth is done, come take your rest." He was baptized at an early age by Rev. J.E. Thompson at St. Paul Baptist Church. He later moved his member to First Baptist Church of Vacherie, L A under the leadership of the late Rev. Lucien R. Garret and Pastor Johnnie B. Magee, where he served as a faithful Deacon until his death. Roland married Diane T. Broden on January 6, 2006. To their union they reared 1 son, Tykeith "Spud" Coleman; 1 stepson, Albert Lewis; and 1 grandchild. Rookie worked for Brand Scaffolding for over 30 years before retiring. In addition, he was an employee of St. James Parish Government's Department of Human Resources in the Transit Department for 5 years. Left to cherish his wonderful memories are his 8 children, Roland Broden, Jr. (Chequita), Sean Broden (Beverly), Don Broden, Jemal Broden, Albert Lewis, Tykeith Coleman, Ciji Lafargue, and Shantel Greenup; 17 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; 2 sisters, Mary B. GRETNA - Ethel Mae Butler, 70, a native of Vacherie and resident of Harvey for 50 years, died April 7. She was the mother of Eugene and Herbert Butler Jr. She was also the sister of Vidella Daggs, Florence Johnson and the Rev. Joseph Broden. She is also survived by two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She was a retired cook with the Jefferson Parish Public School System. ST. JAMES - Liddie B. Camille, 95, a native of Paintcourtville and resident of St. James, died May 24. She was the wife of the late Wilfred Camille and mother of the late Israel Thomas Sr., Percy Leon and Joseph Lewis. She was also the daughter of the late Jules and Caroline Bergeron. She was preceded in death by four sisters and one brother. She is survived by four grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by one grandchild. Horace Dennis, Sr.

On May 20, 1927, Bro. Horace was born to the union of Mary Davis Dennis and Edmond Dennis. On Tuesday, December 19, 2023 at 9:30a.m. at which time a heavenly messenger was dispatched by God, Bro. Horace was pronounced deceased at 11:45a.m. by Haydel Memorial Hospice of Houma, LA. Bro. Dennis heard the voice of Jesus say, "Come unto me and rest, lay down thy weary one, lay down thy head upon my breast", and so he came to Jesus just as he was - weary, wounded, and sad. He accepted his offer for salvation at the age of 61 and God then made him glad. He was baptized June 6, 1988 at Mt. Triumph Baptist Church by the late Rev. Roger Davis. On Father's Day during the early 2000's Bro. Dennis joined Mt. Calvary Baptist Church where he served as an Usher. Horace was united in holy matrimony to the late Ethel Mae Marshall on December 23, 1950. To their union, six (6) children were born: Elaine, Eva, Horace Jr., Harold, Evelyn, and Herbert. During his work life, Horace was employed at Avondale Shipyards Division. After more than 30 years of service, he retired to devote more time to his own business -H. Dennis Vacuum Services, LLC, established in 1975. Horace was a family man with a vision to help the poor and elderly within his community. Using his creative and innovative skills, he designed his very own vacuum truck; and became one of the first Black Business Owners in the small town of Moonshine. After his full retirement, the business was passed down to his son - Herbert Dennis Sr. The business is still in operation today providing commercial and residential services to St. James and surrounding areas. He leaves to cherish his precious memories four (4) children: Elaine D. Jasmin (Joseph) of St. James, Eva D. Ellis (Terry) of Frederick, MD, Harold Dennis (Geraldine) of Slidell, LA, and Herbert Dennis of Vacherie, LA; a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren, a devoted granddaughter - Donrielle "Buffy" Dennis, his first born which gave him the title of "PaPony", a sister - Laura D. Lewis, a brother - Robert Dennis, four (4) sisters-in-law, and two (2) brothers-in-law and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. He is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Ethel Mae Dennis, two (2) children - Evelyn and Horace Dennis Jr., a daughter-in-law Paula Adams Dennis, parents Mary and Edmond Dennis, five (5) siblings: Elma Turner, Melvina Morton, Feeby Joseph Edmond Dennis Jr., and Henry Jenkins; and a Step-Mother Henrietta Dennis. He has now joined his heavenly family where he's free from the troubles and sufferings of this world. He's gone to a place where there's peace and joy forevermore. A celebration of life honoring Bro. Horace Dennis will be held on Saturday, December 30, 2023, at Mt. Calvary Baptist Church, 8969 Hwy. 18, St. James, LA 70086. Visitation beginning at 9AM with service to follow at 11AM. Royal Dennis Jr. - A resident of Oakland, Calif., he died Saturday, May 19, 2007, at his home. He was 51 and a pipe fitter. Ceola (Pierrie) Geason-Johnson

Ceola Pierrie Geason-Johnson, a retired employee of the Monteleone Hotel, died Sunday at Ochsner Foundation Hospital. She was 78. Mrs. Geason-Johnson was born in St. James Parish and lived in New Orleans for more than 50 years. She was a member of Mount Moriah Baptist Church and its Deaconess Board and was president of its Beautifying Club. Survivors include three sons, Michael and Donald Geason and Minor Geason Jr.; a daughter, Beatrice G. Russell; a stepson, Phillip W. Johnson; a brother, Esmond Sheppard Sr. of St. James; five grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren. A funeral will be held today at 10 a.m. at Mount Moriah Baptist Church, 147 Milladorn St. Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. Burial will be in Moonshine Cemetery. Godfrey "Mike" Moody - A retired farm worker, he died at 1:30 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 25, 2007, at Thibodaux Regional Medical Center. He was 70 and a native and resident of Vacherie. Visiting at St. James Catholic Church, St. James. Religious service at the church conducted by the Rev. Louis Oubre. Interment in St. Luke Cemetery, St. James. Vernon "Mr.V" Morton was born on April 17, 1954, to the late Nobel Sr. and Olivia Morton. Norbert Paul Sr.

Norbert was born on August 11, 1936, to the union of the late Cornelius & Erella Smith Paul of St. James, La. On Thursday, January 12, 2023, surrounded by his family, Norbert departed this life and was called home by God to meet his Heavenly Father. Norbert accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as his Lord & Savior at an early age in 1946 at St. Luke Baptist Church, Moonshine. La. He often spoke about how he remembered being baptized in the Mississippi River. Norbert was united in Holy Matrimony to the love of his life, Gloria Simoneaux Paul, in 1970. They were blessed with four wonderful children. Atwood Simoneaux, the late Reva Paul, Norbert Paul Jr. & Katrice Paul Wlliams. Norbert was educated at St. James Parish School System. He was employed by Avondale Shipyard for many Years. After retiring, he still wanted to get out and work so he decided to get a job close to home. He was employed by the St. James Parish School System for several years where he made so many new friends. He thought after retiring from the School board he could relax his body wouldn't let him. So he sought employment again and was employed by Winn Dixie in Gramercy, where he got a chance to see so many family members & friends making their groceries. He loved working at Winn Dixie being outside getting good exercise pushing buggies around holding conversations with people coming and going out of the store. He eventually retire to spend more time with his family. Norbert was definitely a family man. Everyone knew that he loved his family dearly. Norbert enjoyed watching sports, listening to music, and having his close family members come and visit. Although he didn't make it to every family function he made sure he called and checked in on everyone. Norbert made sure he called his kids and grandkids every night to tell them he loved them and was thinking about them. He also enjoyed his daily walks up and down the street or sitting in his car watching cars pass. He also loved chauffeuring his wife around town. What he enjoyed the most was holding conversations no matter what the topic was. You could give him a topic and he would talk about it for hours and hours and say the same thing over and over and over again. Once you started a conversation with him you couldn't stop him. By the end of the conversation you would leave with a good laugh. Norbert was preceded in death by his parents; Cornelius and Erella Paul; his daughter Reva Paul and his brother Walter Paul. and a host of sisters and brothers in law. VACHERIE - Patsy Mae Paul, 78, a native of St. James and resident of Vacherie, died Feb. 9. She was the wife of Raymond Paul and mother of Vera Landreaux, Olivia Clark, Wonderloyn Travis, Hermanese Carter, Wanda Simms, Angela and Pineal Paul and the late Linda, Joseph and Jernard Paul. She was also the daughter of the late James and Viola Pierre and sister of Ceola Johnson, Esmond Sheppard and the late Ollie King. She is also survived by 25 grandchildren, 52 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren. Pineal Paul Sr. (Pine) was born April 15, 1951 to the union of the late Patsy Mae Pierre Paul & the late Raymond Arthur Paul Jr. Pineal was a very kind-hearted person with an awesome sense of humor. Rose Mary Simon

On Tuesday, September 22, 2020, Rose Mary Simon, a loving mother of eight children, peacefully departed this earthly life at the age of 82 at Our Lady of the Lake Hospital in Baton Rouge, LA. She was born on November 17, 1937 in St. James, LA to August Simon and Lydia Keller. She was born again and baptized at St. Luke Baptist Church at a young age where she remained a faithful member. Rose was a quiet sweet loving person with a passion for serving others. She was focused on making sure that everyone was served, satisfied, and happy whether just stopping by for family events or for holidays. She was loyal and committed to her family. She loved spending time talking with her sisters on the phone. The lives of her children, grandchildren, and extended family were her primary concern. She was always willing to listen and help. She made sure that her family and friends were always welcome by having something cooked and the house was always clean. She also enjoyed watching dramas and reality shows, especially "Dancing with Stars." Albert Smith, Jr.

Albert "Choupic" Smith, Jr. was born on May 24, 1939 in St. James, Louisiana to Albert Smith, Sr. and Mary Blain. He was the 3rd of twelve children. Albert shared many happy and fond memories with his parents, siblings, and extended family on Pikes Peak. He accepted the Lord as his personal savior and was baptized in June of 1974 at St. Luke Baptist Church by the late Reverend Joseph Thomas in the Mighty Mississippi River. In 1960 he was united in Holy Matrimony to his devoted wife Yvonne Charles Smith. They were married for 61 wonderful years! To this union 6 children were born; Venaster, Lucretia, Michelle, Albert III, Tevis Sr., and Chad Sr. He attended Magnolia High School and later went on to work at Avondale Shipyard, Dow Chemical, and St. James Parish School System. "Choupic" loved the Saints, but had a special place in his heart for his beloved St. James Wildcats. He could be found running touchdowns along the sideline every Friday night! Albert's surviving loved ones will miss him dearly. Brenda Ann Smith

Brenda Ann Smith, affectionately known as "Potna" by her family and friends, was born on June 29, 1960 to the union of August & Everda Simon in St. James, Louisiana. Brenda accepted Christ at a very young age and was baptized at St. Mark Baptist Church in Labadieville, La. It was in the latter years of her life that Brenda became a born believer. Filled with the Holy Spirit, Brenda recommitted her life to Christ and transitioned with a sincere love for the Lord, our God. A graduate of St. James High School, Brenda went on to enjoy a long, prosperous career in the Oil & Gas field. It was through her passion, joy and enthusiasm for the industry that she met a multitude of people who would ultimately become dear friends and extended family to her. As difficult and demanding as work could be, Brenda was known to be that of an encourager. In her, you were sure to get a good laugh and a strong word of support. Brenda thoroughly enjoyed shopping; dining out and dancing to music with her loved ones. Brenda will be remembered fondly by her nieces, who when they were young girls, she paid to scratch her scalp and give extremely long foot massages. Brenda is survived by her three sons, Joseph Smith III (Paula), Joval Maurice Smith, B.J. Joel Smith, five grandkids, Joseph, Jazel, Dontrell, Jayla and Jarvis, five great-grandchildren and a host of nieces & nephews, cousins, in-laws and friends. Olivia Smith

Olivia "Lee-Lee" Smith, 61, a native and resident of St. James, died Jan. 5, 2000. She was the wife of the late Eddie Smith and mother of Sandra Favorite, Pernell Smith and Craig Johnson. She was the daughter of the late Gilbertine Dillion and Christopher Knockum and sister of Irene Bob, Diane Washington, Linda Johnson, Joseph and Roy Dillion and the late Roland Knockum and Lionel and Leroy Johnson. She is also survived by nine grandchildren. Services were held Jan. 11 at St. Luke Baptist Church, St. James, with interment at the church cemetery.

Henderson Kite Taylor

July 16, 1931 - August 3, 2023
On July 16, 1931 Henderson Kite Taylor (Yank) was the last of three sons born at Charity Hospital to the marriage of Joseph Taylor, Sr and Orelia Tousant Taylor in New Orleans, Louisiana. He attended Booker T. Washington High School and worked multiple jobs before entering the United States Air Force in 1952. A marriage to the beautiful matriarch Marguerite Collins from St. James, Louisiana began on September 21, 1957. This union produced 3 children Orelia Belita Taylor-Gauthier, Henderson Kite Taylor II, and Oscar Deion Taylor. Yank made a career of the United States Air Force which included serving in the Korean War and the Vietnam War, he was a true patriot! Yank and Marguerite lived in multiple states and countries during his 20 years & 14 days of active-duty service to the United States of America, but the loving couple always found meaningful time to visit family between deployments. Following his military retirement Yank was employed immediately by Union Carbide Chemical Company (Dow Chemical) until 1984. Yank was all about family…..period! His legacy of being the conduit for both sides of the family is truly legendary. Always easy going, thoughtful, focused and loving. His lifelong friends are family, and his children's friends were treated as his own. Yank was an avid golfer for over 65 years with three certified "Hole in Ones'' to his name and multiple tournament wins. He and Marguerite especially enjoyed the many golfing vacations they shared with friends and family along the Gulf Coast. The stories about those trips are legendary! Yank was preceded in death by his parents, Orelia Tousant Taylor and Joseph Taylor Sr, Uncle Oscar Collins & Aunt Louise Taylor Collins, three brothers - Joseph Taylor Jr., Wilford Taylor and Joseph Collins Sr., seven sisters - Georgiana Taylor Chapman, Sylvia Taylor Johnson, Joanne Taylor Howard, Jessie Mae Collins Lumpkin, Georgiana Collins Ross, Augustine Wicks and Yvonne Collins Thomas. Yank leaves to cherish his memory: His loving wife, Marguerite Collins Taylor, three children - Orelia Taylor-Gauthier (Anthony), Henderson Kite Taylor, II (Lee Eura), Oscar Taylor (Denise). Four grandchildren - Darien, Brooke Louise, Jillian Orelia and Austin. Three great-grandchildren - Brookelynn Marguerite, Mia and Millie. In addition, an exceptional host of nieces and nephews that continue to make the family proud. Rev. Dr. August Turner

Rev. Dr. August Turner, affectionately known as Rev. Aug, was the oldest child born to Carolyn Emery Turner and the late Rev. Dr. Samuel Turner Sr. on November 2,1968. He was a graduate of St. James High School, St. James, La. and attended Nicholls State University, where he completed 3 years majoring in Pre-Pharmacy. He accepted Jesus Christ as his personal Savior at the age of 23yrs. On July 21, 1991 he was baptized at the Mount Bethel New Hope Outreach Ministry by the Rev. Dr. Charles Geason Sr. He was called to preach and was taught by Rev. Dr. Charles Geason Sr. and his dad. He served as Assistant Minister at Mt. Bethel New Hope Outreach Ministry. Later God gave Pastor Geason the vision and Rev. August the enlightenment, that it was time to take his ministry to another level. Rev. Dr. August Turner was the first minister to be ordained by the New Hope Ministerial Alliance. He was later voted as the Secretary and Treasurer for the New Hope Ministerial Alliance and later became a teacher in the Alliance until his health began to fail. He was also the Sunday School Superintendent at Mt. Bethel. Rev. Dr. August was employed with St. James Parish Sheriff Dept. from November 23, 2004 until May 17, 2007. His favorite hobbies included studying God's word, preaching, teaching and drawing. His favorite scriptures were 1 Corinthians 15: 51-58 and his favorite hymn of praise "I got a new home over in Zion". Rev. Dr. August had a very special bond with his doctors; Dr. Thomas Gregory Chaisson, Dr. Allen Vander, who called him "Buddy" and Dr. Kevin Modisette and wife Tanya, who called him "Chief". Rev. Dr. August never met a stranger and always had something comical and funny to say. He leaves to cherish his memories, devoted mother, Carolyn E. Turner, Vacherie, LA; siblings, Yvette S. DeVante' Eugene Turner

Alpha: May 4, 1994 - Omega: June 23, 2019
DeVante', affectionately known as Vance by his family and friends, was the son of David Turner Sr. & Dana Jupiter, fathered by Darrel C. Jupiter Sr.. DeVante' eagerly accepted Christ at a very young age. On March 14, 2004, Vance' was baptized by Pastor Ronald Harbin Sr. at Bright Morning Star Baptist Church in Napoleonville, La. As a adult, Vance' recommitted his life to Christ and remained an active member of St. Paul Baptist Church, under the leadership of Pastor David Gilton until his departure on June 23rd, 2019. Vance was a 2012 graduate of Assumption High School where he served in ROTC as well as a member of the school band. Employed as a Chemical Handler by SGS Petroleum Services, DeVante' was preparing to continue his collegiate studies to further advance his promising career. Vance' was a founding member of the volunteer based social organization, SwaggTeam, where he served as CEO. More recently, DeVante' was crowned "Mr. Shaka 2019" for the renowned Kwewe of Shaka of Thibodaux, La. DeVante's most revered title however, was that of Father. Vance was the proud, doting dad of two beautiful baby boys, Easton Chase and Memphis Haze Turner. Vance' was also a loving, active Godfather to Alayia Williams and Jade Alexis Talbert. DeVante' was preceded in death by his grandmother Hilda Bell and aunts Linda, Alice, Gail, Charlotte and Janelle. DeVante' leaves to cherish his memory, his parents, Dana & Darrell C. Owen Young Sr.

Owen Young Sr. departed this earthly life on Monday, September 14, 2020. He was born to the union of Willis and Ismay Young on January 6, 1941. Owen was reared in Vacherie LA. He was a member of Thibodaux Family Church and a member of Young Solider and Magnolia. On April 15, 1967 Owen was joined in Holy Matrimony to his beloved wife of 53 years Emma Keller Young. They affectionately referred to each other as sugar. If you saw one, you would definitely see the other. From their union, they were blessed with two children Vince Young and Owen Young Jr. Owen, also known as "Piney Brown", was a great provider for his family. He worked at Dupont Chemical Plant for 30 + years as a mechanic. He also served in the United States Army. Piney loved taking care of his yard and doing things around his house. He loved holding great conversations with friends at jubilee and read his newspaper faithfully. Due to COVID-19, and unable to attend church physically, Piney and his sugar would relax in their recliners and watch their Pastor. He also enjoyed watching football and all of his favorite shows.
