St. Tammany Parish was established in 1810 and was named for Delaware Indian Chief Tamanend, who became popularly revered as an "American patron saint" in the post-Revolutionary period. (St. Tammany is not a saint of the Roman Catholic Church.) The original territory came from parts of Washington and Tangipahoa parishes.
The county seat is Covington. The largest city is Slidell.
