Daniel R. Warren Jr.,
farmer and merchant, Grangeville, La., was born in Washington parish,
La., February 15, 1860, and is the eldest of twelve children born to
Capt. Daniel R. and Sarah (Manning) Warren, the father a native of
Mississippi and the mother of Louisiana.
Captain Warren was born
in Hinds county in 1832, and was the third son and fifth child of eight
children born to Daniel R. and Martha (Seals) Warren, natives
respectively of Georgia and Mississippi. Captain Warren received his
education in the common schools of Washington parish, La., whither he had
moved with his parents when a child, and on December 3, 1858, he was
married to Miss Sarah Manning, daughter of John and Elizabeth (Harvey)
Manning, and a native of Washington parish.
Captain Warren
volunteered in the confederate army in September, 1861, in Company B,
Sixteenth Louisiana regiment, under Capt. N. S. Edwards and Col. P. Pond,
and his first engagement was Shiloh. After this he was in the battles of
Murfreesboro, Mumfordsville and Perryville. He was taken sick, came home,
and there remained for about six months. While there he assisted in
organizing a company, was made captain of the same, and operated
throughout Louisiana until the close of the war.
Since that time
he has been engaged in farming. He moved to St. Helena parish in January,
1873, and has resided in that parish ever since. In politics he is a
democrat. He is a Master Mason. Both he and Mrs. Warren are Baptists, and
he is a deacon in that church.
The children born to his marriage
are named as follows: Daniel R., John I. (deceased), William J.
(deceased), Samuel H., Martha E. (deceased), Clara E., Angus F., Jessie
C., Charley W., Bolivar E., Sarah L. (deceased) and Harriet W.
Captain Warren owns a good farm and is one of the leading citizens of his
community. He is a successful business man, and is thoroughgoing and
progressive.
His eldest son, Daniel R. Jr., received his education
in the common schools of Louisiana, and was married in November, 1884, to
Miss Kate Harvell, a native of St. Helena parish, and daughter of W. C
and Elizabeth (Self) Harvell. To this union have been born three
children: Sarah E., Ernest Lee (deceased) and William R.
Our
subject began merchandising with his father-in-law, W. C. Harvell, in
September, 1888, under the firm title of Harvell & Warren, and they are
doing a good business. In politics Mr. Warren is democratic and his first
presidential vote was for General Hancock. Socially he is a Master Mason.
He is a member of the Baptist and Mrs. Warren a member of the Methodist
church.
They are liberal supporters of all laudable enterprises.
Mr. Warren is a promising young man, is respected by all for his
integrity and uprightness, and his future prospects are bright indeed.
