Vaughan, Henry Landry

Submitted by John Simmons, SCV Member, Phenix City, Alabama

I have noted variations in spelling for Henry Landry Vaughan. Some records indicate Vaughan while others Vaughn.

I will try to determine exactly which. Findagrave for example has Vaughn. Confederate officer cards has Vaughan. I have not seen a grave marker so I do not know what that would reveal. His father was a physican and Mexican War veteran from what I have learned. The more accurate spelling may be Vaughn.

I am researching the officers and crew of the C.S.S. Chattahoochee. This is for an addition to the archives at the National Civil War Naval Museum in Columbus, Georgia.

I have found that one of those officers is from West Baton Rouge Parish.

This is information that I have compiled on him.

Henry was born in 1843 in West Baton Rouge parish, West Baton Rouge, Louisiana. His parents were Thomas P. Vaughan and Mary Aureline Landry. He was living in the parish with his parents in 1850.

He entered the United States Navy and was Acting Midshipman in 1861. He resigned on 25 April and was appointed Acting
Midshipman in Confederate States Navy on 8 July.

He was assigned to Mississippi River defenses in 1862-63. He was serving on C.S.S. Isondiga in Dec.and was in the Savannah Squadron, 1863-64, He was a Passed Midshipman from Jan 1864 and then assigned to C.S.S. Chattahoochee. He was with Lt. Gift in the expedition to Apalachicola in Spring of 1864. This was an attempt to capture a blockading Federal vessel in Apalachicola. https://babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/pt?id=coo1.ark:/13960/t3611mj2s&view=1up&seq=685&q1=Vaughan

He died from paralysis in April of 1891. I found a Findagrave memorial that has date of birth in error. I will correct that. https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/179286282/henry-l-vaughn

There is a profile for him on FamilySearch. https://www.familysearch.org/tree/person/sources/ML9V-46S

After the war he returned to his home in West Baton Rouge. He was married to Cecilia Blanchard in 1869 and they lived in Brusly. He and his wife were living on his father's farm and Henry
was a farm overseer in 1870. He was still an overseer in 1880 on a sugar plantation.

Henry and his wife had 8 children, one son and 7 daughters. After Henry died his widow lived on till 1917. All of their children were still living in 1900.
