Start Date: April 12, 1861, when Confederate forces bombarded Union soldiers at Fort Sumter in South Carolina.

Effective End Date: April 9, 1865, when Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrendered to Union General Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox Court House in Virginia.

Final Surrenders / Last Battle: While April 1865 marked the main surrender, remaining Confederate forces surrendered through May and June 1865, and the very last land battle took place at Palmito Ranch, Texas, on May 13, 1865
