First Zion Cemetery

First Zion Cemetery is also historically known as Shrewsbury Cemetery or Camp Parapet Cemetery.
Location: It sits in the Jefferson/Shrewsbury section along the south side of the railroad tracks that separate Jefferson from Metairie, just west of Causeway Boulevard.

Civil War Origins: The ground was originally a Confederate military installation called Fort John Hunt Morgan. It later became Camp Parapet under Union control and served as a contraband camp for formerly enslaved people.

The burial ground was used by nearby congregations, specifically Ross Church and First Zion Church.
