Ross Cemetery

History and Background
Civil War Roots: The ground underneath was originally a Civil War fortification called Camp Parapet (initially Fort John Hunt Morgan).

Contraband Camp: Following Union occupation in 1862, the site functioned as a refuge and contraband camp for formerly enslaved people who worked and lived on the grounds.

Transition to Local Burial Ground: While Union soldier remains were later moved to Chalmette National Cemetery, the site remained a local burial ground. Today, it is commonly known as Shrewsbury Cemetery and continues to serve adjacent congregations including Ross Church.
