While the history of blacks in St. John the Baptist usually centers around the people of color who were sold into slavery from Africa, there were also free people of color from different localities and native Americans who resided in the parish from early days forward. Slavery, that dark period of American history, was a reality and the information below is an attempt to help those who descend from slaves find their "Roots."
